I'll take your word for it. I'm not too familiar with anything before TFI, but the pics in the article looked like it had a vac modulator on it.

All total it cost me around $200 and I got to know my motor real good. It starts cold with no stalls and idles at lights by itself. I get over 17 mpg and can keep up on the freeway now so yes I my case well worth it. The only difficult part was the carb and getting it dialed in. You can use your feedback carb and put a metering block on it to save money but a good rebuild on it couldn`t hurt either. If it is your DD you might plan on having a backup vehicle while you get it going good. We can help you iron out any problems you may run into don`t be afraid to ask Qs like your doing now. If you plan on keeping it for a while then yea stop the bleeding your chances of getting it running good stock are slim and can be very expensive. Believe me I busted my head under the hood of my ranger for four years. Now all I do is check the fluid levels it`s kinna nice.

The one from napa looks like the one you need it is autolite model and the easiest to install just be sure on the venturi size 1.08. The Holly from advance might work but you don`t have the shift down lever and need an adaptor plate for the manifold. If you use the autolite from napa you will probably need a different spacer to go with it number felpro 60529 and ask what jets are in it you need #50

there are two ways you can run the electric choke either off the ignition switch in run position or on the alternator the stator terminal will give you around 7 volts when the engine is running and nothing when the ignition is on but not running depending on the thermostat you are using mine works good from the ignition. I would try the alternator first then the ignition if it dont open all the way.
