HEY, FIRST OFF I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANKS THOSE WHO STARTED THIS SITE I HAVE GOTTEN ALOT OF INFO FROM JUST READING IT.
ALRIGHT, I HAVE A 1983 RANGER V6 AUTO WITH THE EECIV SYSTEM AND FEED BACK CARB. I WANT TO DO A DURASPARK CONVERSION BUT I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS SMOG LEAGAL HERE IN CALIFORNIA. AS IS, IT WON'T PASS SMOG AND I WAS TOLD IT NEEDED A CAT. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF I CAN DO THE CONVERSION IN CALIFORNIA, OR KNOW OF ANY OTHER OPTIONS TO RID MY POOR RANGER OF THIS USLESS SYSTEM AND GET SOMETHING THAT ACTUALLY WORKS ? I REFUSE TO GIVE IN !!!!! :thefinger:

I am pretty sure you need to fix the existing system. You have to pass both the sniffer and a visual inspection and you cannot alter it. If you want to try and fix it and spend the money you probably need valve guide seals more than likely the egr ports on the head and manifold are plugged. Get the heads up to snuff and hopefully the emission crap is still good. To check the egr run a vacuum line or use a vacuum pump and apply vacuum to the egr at an idle the engine should stall. bad valve guide seals clog the egr system and the oil destroys the cat. If the egr is working replace the cat. Erase the computer memory and reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for 1/2 an hour. fun it for about 20 minutes and run the codes. If you get a code 11 you should pass emissions if not you need to fix the codes one at a time starting with the lower number first and every time you clean/change a sensor you need to clear the memory and reset the computer to verify you fixed that error.

Sorry, we need the original snog here in California.
START with pulling codes.
