clutch master cylinder

If you press the pedal with the master cylinder dissconnected from the slave cylinder will it ruin it? Also looking for one at a junk yard.... how can you tell if one is bad?

Will one work out of a 97' into a 93'?

You might pop out the piston if you did that. You would know it.

There is no way to tell for sure that any junkyard hydraulic part is good. You can guess based on the absence of external leaks and that the cylinder isn't full of water (as is often the case at the junkyard). For that reason, I won't use junkyard hydraulic cylinders at all. Most of them aren't all that expensive new.

I believe you can swap a master and slave together, but the connector between them is different.

I wouldnt do it if I where you. I just whent through this. I thought I would save a few bucks, and it bit me right in the ass. I got master from yard and the slave I had for a while but was used. I ended up pulling the trans twice . Slave worked for 2 days, then took a dump on me.

If the master cylinder is bad would I know it? Would it just stop working? Also I heard on those LUK clutch kits they give you the wrong throwout bearing. Therefore they will not work as well as the stock ones. My clutch has never seemed to work right after I had installed it, but I had always thought it was something hyd. But now feel it is an inncorrect throwout bearing. I came accross this when visiting the ford dealership today. They said that when they compared the one from the kit (LuK brand from most auto parts chains) to the stock one...they are different, and actually resemble a manual clutch style bearing. I am just going to go with all new clutch parts from the dealership, and is actually only going to run me 40.00 over what I paid for the ones from the auto store. I will return the other stuff back to the store. This way I am assured that they will work correctly. How is one to be sure the clutch master cylinder is fully and completely bled?

No, the 1997 master cylinder is completely different.

The 1997 uses a twist lock mount that is smaller than the
"Twist lock" mount used on the 1993-94.

The 1993-94 twist lock mounts into a metal "cup" that is bolted to the firewall.

the 1995-current master cylinder twistlocks into a "bracket" that it an integrally cast
part of the pedal support bracket INSIDE the cab.

Also the earlier (1985-1992) AP-Lockheed master cylinder will fit
and function (sorta...) in a 1993-94 if the metal cup is removed from the firewall, but..
(and this is a big but...) most people wouldn;t like the result...

the 85-92 master cylinder uses a larger bore diameter and if used with the 1993-current plastic slave cylinder the pedal motion is VERY "short" the clutch completely releases
in about 3/4"-1" of pedal travel, you essentially get NO modulation unless you have extreemly fine motor control of your left foot....

The 1993-94 master cylinder uses a smaller bore so that it requires a longer pedal stroke to do the same work, more travel means more modulation.

sometimes even if parts can be made to fit they still won't work right...
