How bad is it?

When I had the engine out I pressure washed it out good. Pressure washed and painted the engine before I put it in.

I live on a gravel road though, I clean it once a year with a bunch of old towels and armor-all once a year for a car show to try to stay on top of it.

I've heard that coke cola is a very effective de-greaser... shake up a bottle and spray it down, wait a bit and hose it off...

I have enough problems with mice without dousing it with a sugary drink. :icon_rofl:

I tend to do a hand scrub with a brush and soapy water (Dawn dish detergent or acne soaps are amazing at removing oil and grease, go figure right?). This is only really possible with the engine out, but I have taken the engine out once every two years for the last 6 years, so for me it wasn't a big deal.

Some folks say something called Purple Power does an amazing job. I don't know, I tend to keep it clean and simple Green works for that.

I have had good luck with the car wash pressure hose. Don't aim directly at any electrical connections and you should be ok and keep the wand no closer than 15 inches or so.

If you live in commiefornia it is illegal to wash your engine in the car wash bay and you will get fined if they even see your hood up in a car wash. (I was informed of this by my uncle who lived in Sunnyvale when I asked why he didn't wash the engine after detailing the rst of the car)

Tried that, doesn't seem to do much if you have a lot of crud on the engine already. Purple Power that is.

That's a Northern California thing. County or City Ordinance. Down here in southern cal you can still do it. I do all the time. Even with cans of engine brite or my degreaser in a pressurized spray can. Done it right in front of the owner. He didn't say a word.

Anyway who the hell is going to come and write you the fine??? The cops are going to be pissed for wasting there time, and I'm sure there isn't a EPA guy just driving around waiting for someone washing the engine off.

I did have a neighbor get fined by the city for his old car leaking to much oil on the city streets so It might happen.

I've had good luck with Purple Power but if its thick grease/dirt scrap as much off and spray oven cleaner on. It can take paint off if you let it sit to long.

I hosed my engine bay down with it and went after it with a scotchbrite pad. It got in all the nooks and crannys but took some spots down to primer. I'm gonna try and find an orange that's close and rattle can it.
