What *are* those louvers for, anyway? Sure, they look good, but (other than keeping the sun out) do they actually serve a useful purpose?

That is their main purpose.

Popular back in the 70's/80's, they even made them for tractor windows to keep the cabs cooler.

At one time when I noticed a rise in gun crimes in Toronto I was considering having a set made up out of steel and lining my whole truck with military grade steel plates...

It was just a bit of a setback when I realized why armored cars are so expensive to build...so maybe I could just hide from potential assassins behind the plastic and hope they didn't see me...

Na I just bought it because it looked cool to me, reminds me of that 70's mustang look where mullets ruled the streets. I happened to catch it on Amazon when it was on sale for about $40 or something around then. If I paid the $120 they are now probably not. It is only plastic, thin at that. But I've spent way more on smaller parts for my STi or our w211 so it's a wash. It's only money.
