You'd go to jail in California for THINKING of hurting a tree root. Probably a public hanging if a bunny could prove that it's feelings were hurt.....
I've cut down three trees that were dead or dying and a thread to my property, or the property of someone I know.

And I didn't "hurt" the rabbit. I ripped it in half with a 12 ga shot gun shell. It made some tasty hossenfeffer though.

Good. Go hunt something.

It was a big 'un too. Squirrel for scale:

Also for scale, they are laying on the tail gate of a 16 F150.

Damn that is a big one. Used to run rabbits with beagles in the Ozarks. Lots of fun. My dad had a beagle that would retrieve them - sorta. She would come back to him with rabbit in her mouth, although getting the rabbit away from the dog wasn't always the easiest thing. People didn't believe him so I took a camcorder and videoed it, sometime in the early 90s.

Have had squirrel much more recently. Some days, they like to sit right where I am target shooting with my air rifle.... darn the luck. Squirrel gumbo, mmmmmmmm

My credo
Crossed threads are tight threads.
Its not that draconian, but I probably shouldnt cut the roots. The trees are old anyways, two have already fallen on their own. I wouldnt mind filling them in and just having a little more slope. I dont think the bunnies here are edible.
