C5/C4 wont roll in "N"

So I have had my C4/C5 hybrid trans apart and put it back together with confidence. The truck is not in running condition at this point but After connecting my drive shaft up, the truck goes forwards when in "R" "N" "D" etc... but it will not roll backwards no matter which gear it's in even in "N". Park seems to be working good as it holds the truck both forwards and backward like it should. The engine rotates freely and is not bound up at the input end of things (torque converter flexplate..)

This doesnt seem normal as every automatic i've known rolls in "R" "N" and "D" gears both forwards and backwards.. mine only wants to go forwards and will just flat out not roll backwards. it makes no bad noises just wont spin.


I have narrowed it down to the trans because when i put the "T" case in "N" it will roll both directions, and i know the t case was working.


Anyone have ideas as to what could have gone wrong?

Does it try? Is it 4wd?

My aunt and uncle's Bravada would go backwards once, it had a major problem with the transfer case (broken chain I think) that would only let it go one way, but would bind up going backwards.

So after searching and googling in a panic, I found that the bands may be too tight.

crawled under and adjusted the bands.. works perfect now

talk about a scare. almost thought i was going to have to pull the trans again.

Be glad you didn't run it with the band too tight or you would have had a mess. Thankfully you caught it and it was the easy fix of too tight bands rather than a sprag put in backwards.
