My buddy wants to rent a mini excavator from them.

I gather from their website they make you use their trailer.

It lists weight as 10,315lbs between trailer/equipment.

Im curious if anyone knows the trailers? Hes wanting me to tow it with my F250. We are only going about 30 miles and im just afraid its gonna be a very short trailer and with that kinda weight sway is going to be a huge issue.

Ive hauled 14k behind the truck on a gooseneck. It was absolutly a load but it did fine. So im not really worried about the trucks actual ability to handle it.

There is the option of renting a 4300lb smaller excavator further away and i can use my own trailer. Im trying to nudge him that way.

Input?

Dad rented a off-highway forklift from somewhere over 10 years ago and they delivered/picked up from the site. It may have been on a semi trailer lowboy.

Seeing as how this is property up north with just a somewhat narrow 2 track to get in thats pretty long i got a feeling theyll bitch if i bring up delivery.

I was gonna ask though.

Never rented anything that big from HD yet, usually smaller equipment. Honestly around here most of the independent rental places are better to deal with, for prices and service.

It might be better to find a local company that specializes in renting heavy equipment. They usually deliver and don't leave you questioning if your equipment is up to the task. Sometimes, it's better to pay the extra money.

I may be taking the negative view here and might be being unfair but it sounds like your buddy is willing to risk your safety in order to save some money.

Tell the buddy to check with Sunbelt Rentals. They will deliver over a quite large area. We use a couple of different locations based on what we need at work. And my company is cheap. So if there is a cheaper way out they'd find it.

Edit: I just saw the description of the location. It still shouldn't be a problem as long as the site has enough room to turn around a semi. Remember, they deliver to hole-in-the-wall construction sites every day

For reference, I rented one about that size from a local company. Borrowed father-in-laws 04 Superduty (SRW, Crew Cab, 4x4). Rental company had it on a 16ft dual axle trailer with no brakes. I had to stop 30 ft short at every stop sign. The trailer would have enough momentum to push the truck that far every time I stopped. And I was moving slow. Never got over 20MPH the whole trip.

I rented one from a rental company with their trailer and it was a tilt deck ~18' deck trailer, my F350 handled it fine

Why should I pay someone else to screw it up when I can screw it up myself for free?
I reserved and rented a ride-on trencher for a day, I had to pick it up and tow it 60 miles with my E350. They would not deliver that far. HD checked my Class III hitch, started it up and checked for mud. They are very, very picky about returning muddy equipment and will charge you dearly if you don't return it clean.

I think hes gonna try to find a smaller one now. I guess HD dont iet you reserve in advance (stupid).

Hes digging out for a septic tank, so biggest thing is itll dig 7 (or 8) feet.

Theres another place a bit further away thatll rent one thats 4300lbs. I can throw it on my own trailer (2500lbs) wont be any issue with that at all.

Oh and no room to turn a semi around in there. He'd either have to unload on the road (in itself a bitch as the back in would be rough and it dead ends at a swamp) or back down the 2 track.

Thanks for the info guys

Sounds like location is awful. At least there is a plan now.

Yes...hes cleared it out some but it even gets tight in there with my 18ft trailer on my jeep. The F250 is a real treat
