Engine noise. Valve train? Will lifters, pushrods and rockers make the noise go away? I believe I’ve narrowed it to that.

Well just new lifters would most likely solve a "ticking noise"
Push rods and rockers can wear out but long shot
Could even be a worn cam lobe, or low oil pressure in general

Heads have to come off to change the lifters, just FYI

When you get the spark plugs out and the valve covers off you can then check each valve for "looseness"
Put socket wrench on crank pulley bolt to rotate engine manually
Start at #1
Rotate engine until 1st valve opens all the way, then rotate crank one full turn, that will put cam lobe on opposite side for that valve
Try to spin pushrod with fingers, should be hard to turn but will turn, so not "loose"
Repeat for next valve

You will feel the loose valve train parts, write down which ones for further inspection once you can get to the parts

Thanks Ron. Very helpful. In my reading I found that the rockers and pushrod wear where they meet and causes noise. My rig is a 98 with about 230k miles but in very nice shape generally and the engine runs good. I prob Need to tap on exhaust with a rubber hammer as the noise travels and hard to pinpoint but with my stethoscope sounded like the right bank. Heard it for he first time when parked next to wall as I finished an oil change. Scary.
