1988 Ranger 4WD --- transmission has developed problem(s). Reverse needs high revs to make it move.

Overdrive seems to be affected also. truck still moves but not that well.

Is there anything that I can adjust or change to see if this beast needs a new home.

thanks to all.

Your questions make no sense to me. It sounds like you need to check your fluid level and if that's good take it in for a rebuild.

Does it move forward in 1/2/3 fine?

If it does, reverse is known to have problems in older ones of these, not much you can do about that... But the overdrive has an adjustable band, so that might help in that respect... but that all depends on what your problem actually is. A rebuild is in order if all gears dont work right.

update/more information

yes 1/2/3 gears work at least in a limited trial. Overdrive and reverse require very high rpm to move, when cold....warmer the system the worse it gets.

Today took the pan off. No really bad pieces in the pan. Quiet a bit of filings at least to my un educated eye. More noteable is that the filter has not been filtering, it has tears in the filter member which are visible at the 2 ports.

So with there being no filtering is it likely that abrasive wear could be a serious problem in the pump and elsewhere?

another note. the night it first failed when I started up the engine there was a vibration/"rumble", I think before I put it in gear. I am thinking that this could have been cause by the trani pump? Just throwing this out to better describe the symptons.

Thanks again.

Well....................change the fluid and filter.....adjust the band(s)....drive it until the transmission gives up....get a rebuilt transmission-----don't bother having your transmission rebuilt since your trans probably has metal filings throughout the vlave body and gears.
