My sons buddy has a 89' f150 5.0, auto transmission, with intermittent running issue.

Sometimes it starts &runs fine. Sometimes it will start fine and stall shortly after, & not restart, turns over but no start.

Sometimes it will not turn over at all....just a click or 2.

Yes a tune up is in the works, just hasn't gotten it done yet. But...When it runs it runs fairly well.

They have tested the ignition module 3-4times, its fine.

They think that the alternator isn't charging correctly....(I'll agree ) when running, it will show on the amp gauge in side, that it is up to 14+ volts and a bit later ½ min er so , drops down to 8v. Appears to be a recently rebuilt one

I suspect also the relays on the DS of the upper intake maybe faulty.

What are those relays for and is there anything else to check???

thanks

Sounds like the voltage regulator inside the alt is flakey. It not letting the alt charge properly will do both of these things, but a couple things you need to check first. First fully charge the battery and load test it, if it passes, get an dvom meter and do a voltage drop test between the battery - and thr intake manifold should be .2 or less, when doing this test have a battry charger hooked up and disable the fuel pump. If the ground passes go to + on the battery to the side of the starter relay, again should be .2 or less, then from the other side of the relay to the starter.

Are the codes for the ranger the same for the 150??

got it running...after

tune up...plugs, wires, cap and rotor
also new alternator,
new relay for fuel pump and heater core (pretty sure these are unrelated to current symptom)

remove spout plug...re-timed to 10deg TDC

prior to "tune up" cleaned the AIC & reinstalled.

Issue at hand is a very high idle.....even after up to temp. guessing 1500-1800 rpm

ran codes...come up with
KOEO= 11 &33
KOER= 12,13, 33, & 25

what is the codes indicating??

is there a wrong way to reassemble the AIC after cleaning???, (just removed the soleniod & sprayed the plunger and housing thoroughly with carb cleaner)

The codes are as follows KOER; 12 unable to control rpm upper limit, 13 unable to control rpm lower limit, 25 KS no response during dynamic test, and 33 EGR valve not opening. Now it sounds like the IAC may have some carbon stuck in it causing the high Idle, or it's running too rich causing it.

Ok thanks!!

they did do some more checking....with thee IAC off, but still plugged in, turn the key on you can see the interior plunger move...then turn off the key it returns , so the solenoid is working anyway.

I had a used IAC from a ranger....the ports are smaller by about 1/8" but tried it anyway, its plunger also worked....tried it and it did idle lower that with the original....but still not where it suppose to be.

Is it going to be harmful to use the IAC from the ranger until a working one can be purchased??

the main symptom is that it has a very high idle...drop it into gear (auto tranny) and it returns almost to normal....Is this still a IAC issue???

Sounds like it's dumping too much fuel, it will take someone with a scan tool to figure this out though.
