My step Dad's ranger started turning the alternator light on, so he replaced the alternator with his spare. Now it's turning the light on above idle. He did the pull the positive cable while running test, and the motor sputters but doesn't die. Now the ****ed up part, the windshield wipers go on high by themselves when you pull the positive cable...

I started going through the harness and found the main power wire from the solenoid to the ignition switch had melted down and was wrapped with tape by the previous owner... Replaced it. Found some other fuseable links that had been replaced. Ripped lots of retarded stereo wiring out. Though we were good to go, same issue.

He's gonna have the alternator tested today.

Alternator charge wires and plug look good. Not melted like many do.

Any other ideas?

Check the grounds pull them apart and sand them metal to metal. Do not pull the battery cable while it is running it can f up the computer and will destroy the alternator fairly quick. Make sure all the grounds are good, fully charge the battery and start it up and do the load/noload test with a volt-ohm meter at the battery there is a section on diag the charging system in the tech library I will get you the link.
