will gears for an 8.8 work with both 28 and 31 splined axles? or do you need a specific gear for each

There's a carrier split I think, too. I'm not sure where, exactly (3.55?), but I have 3.27 stock gears and to go with 4.56's, I'll need to buy a new carrier.

Just ran into this problem installing 5.13's in the d44 on my pal's 79 bronco. He thought he had all the parts and when we mocked it all up to check b/l and pinion depth, the ring gear barely touched the pinion. we were confused as hell untill i grabbed the jeffsbroncograveyard catalouge and saw that we were on the wrong side of the carrier split

he also just installed a powertrax locker in his 9" and tested it this weekend and he said he broke a bunch of teeth on the locked and f'd up some splines on one of his axles. could've been a bad install, though

there's no carrier split in the 8.8.

Get a lockright, cheap (by comparison) and works extremely well. I beat the crap out of mine and it keeps asking for more.

ok i thinka spool is cheaper and if it will be all offroad it would be fine but a locker would be nice so i could have on road capibilities idk

There is also no gear split in the D35 found in the front of rangers/explorers.

Are you sure? how could the d35 carrier split not apply to rbv's?
this is from the 4wheel parts website:

ARB Air Locking Differential Air Locking Differential
Dana 35 Air Locker
Air Activated Selectable Locker

Push Button Operation
For Use With 27 Spline Axles
For Use With 3.31 And Down Gears
Requires Compressor Sold Separately.

I'm gonna be goin from 3.27's to 4.56's, so I'll be finding out if there's a split or not soon...

Ford apparently decided not to utilize the carrier split on the HP D35 TTB, ALL use the "Hi-Ratio" carrier (yes, even those with 3.27 gears).

Never heard that before. Thanks for saving me from buying a new carrier!
