Here the deal I got an explorer 8.8 with disc brakes and Limit slip , but unfortunately its 3.96 gear. My ranger is 4.10 gear set 8.8 28 spline open diff. will the 4.10 gear set fit the carrier of the explorer 8.8 31 spline. Just get an install kit?

How about just the ring and pinion gears?

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
No, 28 spline and 31 gear sets are not interchangeable.
Roert, Could you please explain why? I'm not trying to argue. But I was just trying to think my way through the answer on this and here is what I have. Mind you, I did my own 8.8" gear change years ago.

1. The 28 or 31 spline difference that I'm aware of is just between the axle shafts and the side gears.

2. In most cases, the axle shafts and side gears are re-used.

3. The ring gear has no splines and no interface with the splines on the axle shafts and ring gears. It simply bolts to the carrier, which is normally re-used.

4. The pinion does have splines. But they are irrelevant because they are only for transmitting torque the the yoke or flange that the drive shaft mates to.

So, what else is different about the 28 spline and 31 spline axles that would require special ring and pinion sets for each?

I think the ring will bolt up to the Explorer carrier. The pinion might fit as well but I’m not sure.

I guess maybe I said that wrong , will the ring and pinion gears swap to the explorer rear end.

That's what I understood your question to be. I can't see why they wouldn't. Hopefully, if the answer is otherwise, someone can tell us why.

yea just need to find out before i just by an install kit. i was looking on yukons sight and they dont offer a 4.10 gear set. just a 4.11 would this be an issue, not matching my front diff? or does the .1 not make enough of a difference.

You're correct, I always screw myself up with this. Carriers are not interchangeable, gears are the same.

I might have an interest in the 3.96 R&P leftovers if I’m good condition.

Remington115, please pm me if you would and let me know what your plans are for the gear set.
