Maybe something to think about. There may be two measured quantities.

When the engine has sat overnight and the oil has had a chance to drain into the pan as opposed to taking a dip stick reading just after shutoff when there is oil throughout the engine, would that equal 1/2 quart? I prefer to measure just after shutoff.

I put in 4.5 quarts even with a filter change and its smack in the middle of the marked section :dunno:

I just save that 1/2 quart and in 4 changes, the 5th is free more or less :D
4 x 0.5 quarts = 2.0 quarts... :icon_confused: :dunno: I hope your better at changing your oil than you are at math. It will take 9 oil changes to make your tenth oil change almost free (oil filter). And btw, if you buy your oil filters in bulk, you can save a little jingle :D

I aced reading, not math, so I put in 4.5 qts, it just takes awhile for that extra oil change :D

I must be doing something right to get 5+ trouble free years out of my truck:icon_twisted:

Well I had a minor oil leak from overfilling my oil tank. I used to fill with that 5 qt jug from wal-mart. The oil seemed to be making its way past the oil filter. I had a thread a while back that I made about it.

Now I keep an empty 1 quart bottle that I fill up and I pour the rest of the 4 quarts from the wally world jug into the engine. Oil level is right in the middle of minimum and max.

Also a side note, the Haynes manual states that overfilling the oil tank can cause a rear main seal leak, just a heads up.

Regardless, I say be on the safe side and keep it at 4.5 quarts if not a little less. Remember, if the level is between min and max you are good! I think it's common sense to keep the oil between the safe levels, but that's just me, it doesn't need to be filled to the brim.

I never had a problem with my ranger. Drained the pan and filter then dumped 5 quarts back in. It came right up to the Full mark perfect and stayed there.
