my 4.0 is shot, im lookin to get a 2.3 because of the mpg. i was wonderin if the 2.3 would bolt up the A4LD. Or should i get a manual tranny but i don't think it will work cuz the truck is set up for an auto tranny. any suggestions??

Swapping to a 2.3 is going to be more expensive in the long run than dropping another 4.0 in. You're going to need a transmission, computer, wiring harness, fuel lines, and you're going to have to regear the truck so the 4 cylinder can move it. And you're probably going to keep the same mpg or it's going to go down. It will take you years to make up the savings in fuel mileage, if there is even a savings. I swapped up to a 4.0 from a 2.9 (which ran alright) and GAINED 5 mpg.

i actually thought the bellhousing was the same??? i'm thinking it should bolt up.

would i recommend it? NO, but hey, its your truck. do what you want. just make sure you document it real nice just in case someone in the future has the urge to do it to.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
what gears? if you have 4.1 then its not too bad, get a 4 cyl setup for the trans and 4 c mounts....the wiring for the eec as well.

4.0 and 2.3 don't have the same bellhousing pattern on the block...you'd be better off finding a 4 cylinder truck all together. I mean, if your current truck doesn't have the right rear end gears it'll be real sluggish and eat more gas. plus all new underhood shit etc...
