Hi everyone, I'm kinda new to the 4.0 sohc I have a 04 ranger 4x2 automatic edge. The motor is shot locked up. What years fit? I've heard that all of them are the same with a intake and valve valve cover swap and some sensors. I have a line of a 99 Explorer 4.0 sohc pretty cheap 400$ ease advise. Also will the Mustang 4.0 sohc interchange? Thank you all very much in advance :) :headbang:

They are all the same from start to finish, Ranger, Explorer and Mustang, except for the intake, valve covers and a few sensors. The earlier ones have some issues with chain guides/tensioners and heads cracking or warping that were resolved later in production, but you get that with almost every engine.

OK great thanks for the information. So is the Mustang the better choice? Explorer or ranger? Or does it matter? I've read that there rated different in Hp and tq or is that just in the tuning? Thanks again for the fast reply.

They are all pretty much the same. Any power differences are likely in the tune.

One more question if you don't mind do you know if the automatic 5 speed transmissions are the same from 04-09? Both 4.0 sohc both 4x2 and both Trans code D
They look the same but with different color wires and I looked up the neutral safety switch online and it shows to be different. Just wondering if I swap them will it be OK thanks in advance.

One thing I forgot to mention in the initial reply.

The early ones had the PCV in the valley. Later ones have it in the back of the valve cover. The hole in the block is present on both versions, but the later one has a freeze plug in it.
