+1 the 3.0 has completely dif bellhousing pattern than 4.0. the 2.8 2.9 and 4.0 had interchangeable bellhousing patterns, the 3.0 shares only w/ fwd 3.8s and other 3.0s, including the 3.0 and 3.2 sho v6s made by yamaha. if you want to do a 4.0 swap your best bet is to find a wrecked ranger or sploder w/ a 4.0 and rob everything out of it and drop in your trk. otherwise get another 3.0 thats 95 up (eecv engine) and swap them out, unless you have a 3.0 or 3.2 sho taurus you want to rob out of. the fwd 3.8 swap is highly looked down upon due to reliability issues and im not sure if its been done at all.

Like the saying goes:
YOUR MONEY IS YOUR LIMIT.
You can do anything your money allows you to do. But You have to make up your mind.
If You want to stay 3.0 you can do as you want as long as your computer and wire harness are compatible.
Otherwise you will have to swap not only the motor but its orikinal wire harness and its PCM.
And if your motors pcm are not compatible than is the same as swaping any other motor (meaning the transfering of harnesses, pcm, etc).
Good luck.

Since you won't use the search function, I'll just tell you...

You can use a short block 3.0L from any year. Even the front wheel drive cars with the 3.0L. (you have to install ranger head gaskets). Use the sensors equipped on your truck.

Just be carefull with what short block you buy. There are some DIS and some with Distributor. I am not sure if You can install the synchro from a DIS to a ditributor type block.

The short blocks are all the same. The Dizzy and the CMP can be swapped.
