Can a starter from an automatic transmission work on a manual transmission? Don't remember if it will, searched online and unable to find any legit information. My starter recently had some issues..had it completely rebuilt around 10 years ago. It was the original Motorcraft starter. Found a guy local , he charges 125.00 for a full rebuild. I put in a used oem spare I had.

Found a local yard with a good clean oem used one from a 97 3.0 Aerostar for 35.00.

I'm questioning the rebuild of the parts and where they come from and the rate of cheap China crap failure in parts.

Ford and oriellys are well over 200.00 , I can get a ford reman from rock auto for 90.00.

For those who know I truly only use oem parts on my ranger and other ford's I've owned.

Any help is appreciated about an auto vs manual transmission starter info. It will work I will go ahead and buy it.

Thanks

I think they are different

Looked up part numbers on rock auto for your truck and the aerostar.

No motorcraft number for the aerostar but on a "pure energy" starter the part number for your truck is 12187. The aerovan 12187N. It also wanted a production date for the van.

No idea what the difference is or if its close enough to work.

Thanks for your reply rusty.

I decided to have the original starter rebuilt again. The automatic starters are different from the manual transmission. I'm passing on the Aerostar starter.
