I drove home with O/D seem to work then
So I am assuming trans toast. The previous owner changed engine and say auto tran is original I counted pan bolts and got 18 yet sticker on door say TR-D so that maybe goofie I find in my research. It has a dipstick
As I have five Ford Explores. Which transmission will fit Ranger?

2001 Explorer Sport 4X4 4.0L SOHC no door sticker has dipstick
1998 Ford Explorer Sport 4X4 4.0 EFI TR-D on door sticker has dipstick
2003 Explorer XLT 4X4 4.0L SOHC TR-V on door sticker no dipstick
Then I got a 2004 XLT that needs solenoid pack installed that i buy TR-V no dipstick
And a 2005 that's got the V8 XLT
Will any one of these first three sploder transmissions fit?
Was checking on line and I don't think there is 10" on tail housing and could not read part number on left side bell housing but counted 18 bolts on pan which melted my brain and gave me major scull cramp. Thanks

Yes, needs to be rebuilt or swapped out

The one-way clutch is bad, common symptom is no D or R but will move in 1 or 2 and can be shifted to D once its moving and it will keep on moving
Transmission must be torn down to repair so full rebuild at that time
Not a common failing but a known failing on any automatic, not a Ford thing, they all work the same way, lol

The 2001 4.0l 4x4 would swap in
As would the 2003 4.0l 4x4 model, but if you like dip sticks...................
The 1998 won't work, no ISS or OSS sensors
V8 won't fit 4.0l block

the grey-t escape
I had a 97 2wd 3.0 with no 1st, had to start in 2nd then shift to D above 35 mph, everything else worked-even overdrive. It had 180-some thousand on it at the time. only paid $500 for it, got many good parts from it and used the rear frame to make a trailer out of it.

Yes, the 4R/5R transmissions got ISS(intermediate shaft speed) and OSS(output shaft speed) sensors added in 2001
They are external
2001 and up computers need those sensor

What threw me off in research was D on the rangers door sticker and 18 bolts on tran pan. Research say 18 is R4 and D say R5 lol

Ya it will be a parts thing as engine good also when I robbed the 17" winter tires from 03 xlt sploder for ranger I noticed it had heavier suspension than ranger like coil over shocks zoo maybe lol. Think sploders tuffer for safety maybe. Ranger looked good with them 17" alloys from sploder. Back to 15" 31's this now for summer

D on Ranger door label is 5-speed automatic

R4 and R5 are axle codes

yes, 18 bolt pattern was 4R, and 16 bolt 5R, seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/ford_ranger_automatic_transmission_pan_bolt_patterns.png

But.................some 5R's having 18bolt pans, lol
Haven't read about any 4R's with 16 bolt
But 4R and 5R difference was computer software, internally they were the same transmissions, 2001 and up got 2 new sensors on the outside and tone rings on the inside
The "5th gear" was turning OD ON while still in 1st, to get a "faux 2nd gear" for a smoother shift
