i changed the head gaskets, intake and mounted it all up...

ran great..... drove it 100 miles mo problems then the CEL comes on and it develops a miss.... now it will bearly stay at speed.... at part throttle it just falls flat on itsels, but mash it and it has TONS of power. Plus it runs a bit warm.... no thermostat and is mid range temp wise.... noR|Mal

im sure i put the head gaskets on correctly but am going to check in the morning.

Any other ideas.... it throws code 172 with a paperclip and CEL light test,

another stupid question... ((( work lately has taken its toll on my mind )))

internal or external balance on the vulcans..... i did not change harmonic balancer, I assumed all 3.0L pushrods motors to be of same balance...

donor engine 2005 merc sable FFV
recipient vehicle 1993 Ranger Super 4x4

both 3.0L vulcans, only diff is ffv vs non ffv

Try cleaning the MAF or swap it with a known good one and see if that changes anything. Using a balancer designed for the 2005 engine would be a good idea but would not cuase your symtoms.

1. The Donut Gasket is after all of the O2 sensors on a 93 so it shouldn't affect any readings.

2. If you are running the 2005 balancer how are you setting the timing? The newer balancers do not have anything but a TDC mark I believe.

"but mash it and it has TONS of power"

That symptom right there tells me it's an Emissions system problem.
WOT is a PCM mode that ignores sensors input.

Fix the exhaust leak and throw an O2 sensor at it.
Or swap the two O2's and see if the code follows the sensor or stays on that bank.

ok, yesterday i drove it 240 miles, then temperature issue resolved istelf, must have been an air pocket, but...

it ran perfectly, no CEL no misses no anything for about 120 miles, then it started to throw codes again.... I wonder if something is getting overheated (electrical wise or sensor wise).

I am going to go out and check codes again, but the CEL would come on, go off, come on go off several times in a row then the problems will start.

I am going out to read the codes now....

update: codes 171,172,565

removed the exhaust manifold
used cutoff wheel on the manifold studs
drilled out the studs
used grade 8 bolts with lock washer to reattach the Y pipe
installed new manifold to head gasket
tightened everything and checked or an stray leads or tools
started engine
VERY quiet
read codes again with same results
reset codes
565 returned immediately
111 all clear

now to drive it and see what happens.....

i'll check back in in three or four days if no problems, sooner if something happens

If that canister purge solenoid (565) is sticking open, that could be a vacuum leak, contributing to the lean running.

i've had that off and on several times, plugged and unplugged....

ill pull the line from the canister and see if it is pulling vacuum

i put almost 800miles on it since last post

in the morning i can drive the 120 mine trip no problem, but when i leave at 5p it makes it about 60-80 miles and then srarts to buck and surge, at part throttle the engine studders, at full throttle it accelerates easily... i did not replace the o2 sensor when i repaired the manifold...

it still has a 172 code key on engine off.... have not done the test with engine running whereas its late and im usually tired. my question is this, can then o2 sensor defect like that, with ambient temp. or could another sensor be experiencing a heat related failure....

TPS???
MAF???
distributor module???
