The 1350 will have a slip yoke style front output, the 1354 will have fixed yoke on both ends.

There is also a tag that should identify the transfer case model.

There is one 1350 that also has a fixed yoke, but are somewhat rare (they were used on some STX "Highrider" trucks). The yoke basically looks like an afterthought on the nose of the slip-yoke-style case (and uses a smaller u-joint), whereas the 1354 has the yoke in a more "normal" configuration (pictured above).

Some advice, take hold each output shaft and try to turn them in different directions, make sure the chain has no slack in it. Also take out the fill plug and check the chain.

There are no BIG strength differences between the 1350 and 1354. You could use a 1350 manual and use a front driveshaft from a TK5or FM145 trans. Just make sure it's got the big joint. Same joint size as the D35. Shouldn't have to trim the DS at all.

The major difference is that all 1354s have fixed front outputs and most 1350s have slip front outputs. There are some 1350s that have a fixed front output however that came in the STX rangers.

I have one and am about to get another if your interested......

Dont mean to hijack the thread but would i be correct in assuming that the 1350 and 1354 are different patterns of bolts that run along the outside of the cases (where the case is split in half)?

Not only are they the same bolt battern, but the front plate is identical. You can run a 1350 front plate on a 1354.
