07 Ranger 10" Drum Issues: Help!

Hello everyone. New member to the forum but have been snooping for a while here.

I was looking for some helps with some braking issues im having with my Ranger here. its an 2007 Supercab with 10" drums and an 8.8 (2wd).
Lately when stopping the brakes have had a slight shudder. The front brakes are perfectly fine - both a mechanic and myself have inspected them, as well there is no known ABS issues with the truck.

I had the brakes rebuilt and at first was good as new, but I hit a pothole and then the brakes started to shudder again.
I initially thought it was a stuck drivers-side handbrake (that I replaced) it was better for a bit but now is back to the same issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you suspect the rear brakes are the problem, you will have to take the wheels and drums off and check them again. Any dampness from oil or brake fluid on the shoes will cause a problem. Directly looking and inspecting the brakes is your best move right now.

can you give us a description of shudder?
at what speed?
gets worse if you brake harder?
gets worse on repeated stops?
while coasting at 30-35 mph does the truck sort of wobble?
what happens when cruising at 110 kph?
how big was the pothole, is there a bent wheel now?

you can disable the ABS by unplugging a sensor. the front ones are right behind the bumper & easy to get to.
then does the shudder go away?

jack up one wheel at a time and spin while an assistant lightly applies the brakes, any variations in effort to spin?

Yup you nailed the wobble part, 30-40mph it will wobble a bit.
When you first drive off after the truck has been sitting for a bit it seems OK once you drive a bit more it starts to shudder. The shudder can be felt throughout the truck both in the brake pedal and steering wheel. Happens at all speeds. Once you accelerate to highway speeds there is no wobble but the braking shudder is there.

Already thought it could be the ABS, when I unplugged a sensor it was the same.

may be a slightly out of round/warped rotor. as you drive the high spot heats up and gets worse.
if a fin or two are cracked the rotor can develop a fat spot.
rotors can be pulled out of round by improper torquing of the lug nuts.
I tighten in 3 steps, 35,65, 85 (I lube the studs & nuts and don't go any higher on torque)
could also be a tire heating up and getting a soft spot at the damaged area.

over the years on my 2005 2wd I had issues with the rotor/hub assemblys being out of round causing your symptoms.

Thats really good to know honestly. I tend to just tighten the lugs with a ratchet or impact on a low setting then torque them to spec, maybe I'll try your method in the future.

I'll inspect the rotors and see whats going on - thanks for the help
