It costs a lot of money to print paper owners manuals. Then if you find a mistake... you reprint... gets very expensive. Electronic versions are far cheaper and can be updated with a few clicks of a mouse.
Great idea in theory unless the infotainment center is shot or the battery is dead. Electronic manuals save the manufacturer money for sure but aren’t very helpful if you can’t access them. Paper doesn’t need power or a display to work.

If the battery is dead you might as well sort that out before you worry about how to sync your phone or change the tire anyway. :dntknw:

But how do I read the instructions on how to jump start my vehicle... or the warning not to drink the battery acid!!!!!

That's all fine and good. But, the manual should be made available on multiple digital formats. DVD, Flashdrive/USB stick, PDF available for download. And paper, for old geezers like @rusty ol ranger.

The cost of printing manuals was just replaced with the cost of the tech group that formats the manual to digital form. It's not actually cheaper, it's just re-allocation of funds.

Not really.

Ford has had manuals available digitally online for decades.

Having been there... done that at GM for 16 years... the amount of overall waste in hard copy manuals is atrocious. Not so much when printed... or the paper involved but getting that information to print "ready" required way more people. Sure... there is a small team that manages the data base but there were entire departments eliminated by going electronic. I would guess probably 60% headcount reduction overall. That's where they save. Savings on truckloads of print paper to create working hard copies was just icing on the cake.

And then few few people ever look at them anyway.

Those digital copies don't upload themselves, nor do they self correct. That small group or team to do digital stuff, costs money too, and those techy IT guys ain't cheap.

My point is they will lose one "budget" and replace it with another. So the old paper budget is now the IT budget and so on. I work in Revenue, so I know a little bit of how to reallocate and not intermingle

Ok. So what are they gonna do with all the money they save from digital manuals? R&D? No they have to reallocate those dollars to a different division in the same department. Probably the digital and or social media division.
