Got a pair of "55watt Off Road Lights" from harbor freight for 10 bucks, vs the standard 20 something. Took one of them and added an extra reverse light. Its run via a switch in the cab, seems bright enough, just waiting for it to get dark so I can see how bright it actually is. Questions/Comments welcome.

The only thing I had to do besides the wiring and the bracket, was to take the light out of the black housing, and flip it over so the drain holes were facing the ground, since the light is upside-down.

Edit: Night pics:
It has more of a driving beam than a fog beam, but it should work well for backing up to trailers and stuff at night.

How hard was it to wire it up with the relay and everything?

It was easy as pie, because I didn't use a relay :P

All I did was wire up my switch with the stock wire, then I used 12ga wire running from the switch to the light.

I looked at all that relay stuff at one time, then I got confused and decided to just wire everything how I saw best.

Downside, they don't come on with the reverse lights, but big deal, half the time that would just scare other drivers if you're in a parking lot.

Thanks

You do realize it is hard on the switch to take the load of that light right?

yeah it could melt it and damage your wirings. u should add the relay. its not that hard

My KC's up front don't have a relay. If the MFG didn't send one, then I honestly don't see why it needs one, but if you think it does then I might stop and pick one up. But from what I remember, relays end up attaching to your backup lights and other crap, but I don't want that, don't need any more damn wires all over the place.

Why can I not run my switch power (the fused line) to the battery instead of the fusebox. I would have to shorten my wire about 4ft, not a big fan of that.

Alright, switch was getting hot tonight... I'm going to get rid of the stock wiring and go to 12 gauge stuff, and I also got a relay and a in-line fuse holder for the whole relay deal. The relay seems straight forward enough, I might post pics if anyone wants it...

I put two of those same lights on mine, and I did use a relay w/a tie into the right side back-up light.

They work great, and I'd be happy to post pics if there is any interest.

Thanks!

This light isn't exactly what I was hoping for (flood pattern), its more of a driving pattern, but it will still do well as a light for hooking up to trailers.

for either pattern, the higher up you mount them, the more you will see. perhaps on top of the bumper right under the tail lights? i have topper, and mine are mounted up high just below the roof line on it. it's the driving light pattern and i get lots of bright light where i need it to the sides and back, rather than scattered as might be the case in a shorter flood pattern. and no matter where you mount them, make sure the lenses are switched to match whether they are mounted upside down or right side up. that will have a big impact on where your light goes and how much you see with driving lights. just a thought.
