Need some opinions on a few V8's plus a few other ?s

My 5.4L isnt bad lke i said, but it just not as strong as the 351's ive experinced.

"I now drive a 02 F250 7.3l Powerstroke SD as they are the leader in HD trucks."

In the class that an F-250 falls into, yeah I would give you that. But a real HD truck.....not a chance. Sorry fordmike1

Better luck next time

I've had experince with two f-250's with 351's a 94 F250 Heavy duty extended cab with 8 ft bed 4x4 4.10 gears , it wasn't bad horrible gas milage but for a fullsize not terrible bad. Also an 82 f250 4x4Light Duty stadard cab still have that one, with an 86 351 HO from a police interceptor, pulling loaded trailer it lacks power especially uphill, but i blame that mostly on gearing, and the engine being an interceptor engine, but unloaded it'll shit n get . ONly driven a 2000 f-250 with a 4.6L, and other than sounding good, it left alot to bedesired for pulling, was my neighbors truck he got rid of it one year later for a f-350 wiht the 7.3L powerstroke.

If you want shear pulling power, you can't beat the torquey 7.5L 460 V8:icon_thumby: My dad has an old 86 F-350 with the 460, sukin gas n hualin tons of a$$. Can't say for certain never dirven one but around here most claim the old 460 will out run and pull the Triton V10.

if your looking for 3-330 hp with the 351 simply run a stock or cleaned up stock 351 efi lower intake and ford 302 H.O upper intake with 70 mm tb/egr/maf combo and 24 pound injectors if you bring the compression up past 9.5...otherwise the stock injectors will likely work ok with a stock ho 351.....bc broncos was selling the adapter to put the stock stang upper to the stock 351 lower for quite some time. with that goal a stock a9p will run it no problem.

generallly cost me less then 200 bux to do that not including fuel pump and line.

though the pump and line usually run less then 100 bux new.

i have worked with many conversions and really like the effort bc puts into their offerings.

i have just returned recently from an extended work trip and am currently busy working on several race vehicles of various types but it certainly wont take much to get a 351 converted and running in your application of 300ish hp.

An "interceptor" 351 isn't what I'd call an "interceptor". It's basically the same motor as an earlier 80's 351 with the lone exception of the HO marine cam and the hermaphrodite Holley 4180 carb. A roller 351W will pull anything you hitch onto the bumper. Had one in a 95 E150 van backed by an E4OD and 3.55's. The only difference in it and that Interceptor 351 was the cam and EFI injection. Same pistons, heads and crank.

Yeah i figured as much just wasnt sure if the Cronwn Vic Police car 5.8L HO , had a different cam from the truck version of the 5.8L HO.

Just in my opinion it just sounds a little cooler, saying it has an interceptor engine in it since technicaly it does but not really lol

As for the 94 its was respecatable for pulling power, biggest reason for getting rid of it was rust, 148k miles and it was really burning oil bad on cylinder 8, to the point to where it would show up on the plug when pulled, and the tranny was on its way out, so it jus wasnt worth fixing. so wiht the needed body trans and engin work need in the near future i figure it was best to get rid of it while it was still driveable.

Will definitely look into the adapters from bc broncos, that will defintiely save some cost seeing the stock 351 botom ends can be found for 50-100 dollars as for the 5.0L top ends.:icon_bounceblue:

the idea that anything pre 2001 will out anything an equally equipped post 2001 is a fuggin BAAAD JOKE when it comes to towing.

ridiculous at best. certainly all agree the 351 is a great engine...but its first smog offerings in trucks all the way to the venerable mid eighties 351 ho monster... when compared to the first offerings of the 5.4 is not even remotely comparable.... the 5.4 would murder it....

to knock the 5.4 in its first years is fine for the ignorant...but considering it was saddled with such ridiculous demands as the ridiculous claims made here about the 351 its pretty impressive.

the 5.4 had alternate fuel capacity for mass considerations from the gitgo....lpg/cng/---cng/gasoline duel fuel ect along with crazy emmisions demands. that really put a smothering on its early potentials. once the three valve days hit its comparable to the 460 stockers with 130 less cubes in actual performance data. not the seat dyno....actual work done in time allowed when towing on flatish ground...the v10 definatly competes..

dont get me wrong the 351 ho trucks were tough.....i remember them blistering 20 sec 1/4 mile passes via a raging 210 hp 315 pounds of fury under the hood rather vividly...of course thats with them bone stock and empty........ defiantly out perform any current offerings with 10k in tow:icon_thumby:

as to the ls engines. simply put, they are animals. much more cost effective for power and easier to fit/package then even the new ford 5.0/boss 6.2 offerings let alone the reg mod/tritons they are replacing..

but the reality here for me is this...
theres no losers in any of these new powerplants in my tiny little mind.

i have several lower and uppers you can have for whatever the cost of shipping is. unless your close enough to meet up with...depending on time table i plan to be in pa a few times before august

What's the 3V V10 rated at ? As I recall a mildly built 390 would match them in HP & Tq. And get about the same fuel economy.

362 hp and 457 lb.-ft. I doubt the 390 would live as long though with good oil anything less than 200k is a fluke. The trucks that the V-10 comes in are also a lot heavier than what they normally put a 390 in.

A F-250 is what I would consider a pretty heavy duty truck. Obviously it isn't in the same class as a semi truck, but it is a lot heavier than most light duty trucks... like say a Ranger.

A 390 would be right at home in a SuperDuty. Ford used them in their FT versions in the F600-700-800's for years. The main reason engines last as long as they do now vs then is mainly due to low tension rings and tighter bearing clearances, and better oil. No reason a similarly built 390 won't do everything a V10 will. I had a GT 390 in a 70 F100 and it would tow anything you hooked to the bumper with a C-6 and 3.50 gears. And still get mileage similar to a V10 (10-13 mpg) and that's without overdrive fed by a carb. I've seen F600-800's re-engined with pickup truck 390's that did the job just fine. And these outweighed a SuperDuty by several thousand pounds.

Wow that would be amazeing , would you be able to get a quote for what the shipping would be?

i imagine @ 40-60 bux. possibly 30 or less...soonest i can weigh them as a package would be monday.

with modern componantry/clearances like mentioned i would agree....and a mildly worked 460 would best it as well.

but at an emission level no way...then again what would a mildly built v10 net for performance.?.?.

my points are made here for "as delivered" from the factory for you to use. as delivered is great for most but its never good as it gets ...right?

i know for damn sure me or you armed only with a fresh timing set of careful choosing and maybe a dizzy curve can make a 80's wheezer 460 out pull a stock v10....maybe some sawzall work to the exhaust as well.

i know i love the sound of a healthy 390:icon_cheers:

I wonder if a 390 wouldn't best the V10 backed with an overdrive transmission in fuel economy.
