What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Featured Build Threads

Got the SuperBoot installed on my Hurst shifter. Had to trim the plastic bezel from the factory inner boot. Instructions from Hurst said it would fit right over, but obviously they never tested it. I’ll 99% people are keeping thr factory cupholder and it never came up.

Now I just need to get around to writing up all what I did for the manual swap.

The 2011 got an oil change and new rear brake pads and rotors. The parking brake shoes are getting pretty thin. So, I'll have to take care of that at some point.

In other news, Ford Parts agreed that I never got the relays I ordered and will be sending them at some point. When and how fast was clear as mud in their notification email. Next time, I'll go through Tasca, even if they don't have everything I need on hand. At least they are much more proactive and responsive when something happens.

Today Ranger related I started by gluing the rear view mirror button back on the '90, since it involves waiting thought I would turn the stereo on and realized the battery was low so put it on the charger...

Then the day progressed and I moved the F350 and camper to the tractor pull grounds and good/bad there's a V8 Explorer there in the line of crusher cars... so I pillaged that for a bit today by acquiring the cowl trim, headlights/turn signals (if the chance comes I should grab the tail lights, just realized), radio bezel, OHC and sensor, fuse panel cover, rear window (it basically fell off and they would have broken it anyway so why not). Oh and I took the dipstick... I need to grab the clock spring so my '00 has a horn/cruise control again... If anyone needs the tack cluster let me know in the next like 3 days...

Sort of a compilation of the last week or so but it's an ongoing project that I was still working on today. I finally got my replacement cab painted and once i got it back I started installing a few things and stuck the carpet in there I've had squirreled away for about 20 years just to see how mis shapen it was, it fit great though. I also re covered the headliner and added sound deadener around the cab while it's still warm enough to do so. I'm not going to know what to do with myself after I'm as it hasn't had sound deadening or carpet for most of my ownership and it will no longer have a sunroof that leaks either.

Love that headliner. Nice job!

Not quite Ranger related but close enough... went over to the harvest fest grounds and obtained the steering wheel and clock spring out of the '98 Explorer there and the air temp sensor from the sport trac... still keep forgetting to grab the rear view mirrors from both for spares...

When I got home I worked on getting the hitch height dialed in for the '00 Explorer since it's going to do the tractor pull (supposedly both me and the wife with the same rig), it's right at the max so should be good! Then I put the cowl piece on and swapped the headlight, not sure I'm going to know how to see with normal attachment points instead of some fence wire and a strategic blue shop towel holding the headlight somewhat in the right area... I still need to polish both and aim them but hey, attached is better than it's been since I've had it!

Rinsed all the sand and dust off from the wind.

109 heat index today so rinsing the truck off felt good. Supposed to be hotter tomorrow so may need to spray it off again

I replaced a bearing, seal, axleshaft and drum brake shoes + springs on the rear passenger-side of my ranger. I found an axle shaft at pick-n-pull with very little wear on the bearing journal and used it.

Now when I drive, I am getting a loud tire thumping noise
I cannot hear it during acceleration. I hear it during mild throttle and while cruising and I definitely hear/feel it on the highway. it feel/sounds like a whopped tire.
I felt my rear tires for round-ness and they feel fine.
I jacked the rear end of my truck up and spun the tires and driver side rear wheel moves up and down ever so slightly and the pass side rear wheel moves side to side ever so slightly maybe 1/8in or less.
I also swapped my spare out between both rear wheels and i can still hear the 'thump thump thump' noise. i suppose I should swap the wheel out for the fronts as well.

I just got a job 1000 miles away and it would be nice to take the ranger and make a vacation out of one of these trips, though until I get this resolved, ill probably be sticking with the prius :x
Also I am looking at changing fluids on my 2nd gen prius and it seems like a daunting task, as If I perform any procedures wrong, i risk activating some sort of limp modes that may require my vehicle being sent to a shop to clear...
transmission fluid replacement seems simple enough.
pulling old brake fluid out and pushing new brake fluid in seems easy enough as well.
looks like I may want to pony up the $150-200 for motor and inverter coolant replacement.
advice?

I think you have said it, but try moving the wheels around to the four corners of the truck. If the passenger rear goes side to side, swap it to another position and see if that rim still goes side to side, or if the wheel you replace it with now goes side to side. Obviously you’ll know if it’s the rim or if it’s the axle face that holds it.

On that, make sure all of the axle face and lugs and the inside of the wheel, etc. are all clean, no rust clumps or crud on them

Do the same on the up-and-down wheel.

If you have a buddy with the same wheel pattern, maybe try your wheel on his, just standing still to spin it, and his on yours. it takes a little time, but that’s free.

You can also check the circumference, or the side to side wobble with a homemade “indicator.”” drill, a hole and a flat piece of wood, and push a cut-offcoat hanger into it. Then the tip so it’s very close to the outside of the tire, or the side of the tire. Then slowly spin the tire and see if the space is moving in and out. Don’t drag it on the tire, just put it close.

Hope it helps

Yeah. Having them all in the middle gives really poor handling. More stable at the corners.

Rick W, I suppose I am more or less asking what is the likelyhood that I have a faulty bearing, axleshaft or brake shoes causing the noise?
Ill def check and see if those specific wheel wobbles has shifted tires since the tire rotations.
Also I buy my tires used from discount shops :|

Nothing wrong with “R&B” tires*, I use them all the time, could never afford that many new ones for all my various trucks and trailers

I think it’s very unlikely that the bearing would cause the motions you’re talking about. The side to side wobble might be a bent axle, but that’s pretty rare. They are made from very hard steel, and they are very hard to bend on a little truck like that. If a bearing was allowing the up and down motion, I think you’d hear all kinds of racket. Up and down is probably the tire, the wobble could be the tire or the rim or if it’s not seating properly on the end of the axle when bolted down.

Another question, when you put on the lug nuts, do you first barely snug them, and spin the wheel as you put them on? If you tighten one down Hard, and then the next, and then the next, without turning the wheel for it to center under the nuts, it’s possible you could have tightened it out of center.

Oh, and “R&B?” Round and black…
