06 Frame Repairs


One of the things that helps with welding is lots of light on the area. You have to be able to see the weld puddle. Put some 500 watt halogens on the area, or the led equivalent. Also don't have the mask turned too dark. The UV rays are blocked regardless of where you have the setting at. And finally, make sure you can see the melted metal ( the puddle) moving along where you want the weld to go. Make sure both edges are melting into the puddle. It's fairly easy when you weld on a flat horizontal surface, but when you do verticle it's harder.
As a rule, vertical up is stronger but harder. Verticle down looks better but is weaker.
And a grinder helps hide all manner of sins... Lol
 
Frame descaling almost completed, its in pretty decent condition. The black paint is rust converter/primer. I will be treating the whole frame again, but bare metal gets priority.

I also realized my parts truck has a tow hitch, so that's one less thing I need to buy! But I still need to learn how to wire in a 7 pin plug for my camper. Trip is in 6 weeks. Hoping this truck is out of the garage in 3 weeks or less.

Found this suspicious spot on my cab corner and investigated with my stupid tools, 2 seconds later.... Luckily I have a dryer I'm trashing, so I have sheet metal lol.

Lighting is a big issue for me currently, but luckily it's all over lol. When I was in welding school way back in the day, we all had our own closets we welded in. Dark af, but we had to stick weld 4" steel pieces together with a huge overlap, took me 3 hours of straight welding.

Thanks to that, I don't mind welding in dark places anymore lol. Doesn't make my welds better tho..... Lol.
 
Glimpse of my next project.... 1988 Ford F-Superduty with a 460. No rust issues thankfully. But all the electrical was toasted bahahaha (complete loss of electrical)

I might have an EVTM for that, lol.

I also have a 94 F-350 dump with a 460. Needs some rust repair but mostly the valve guides are trashed so the heads need re-worked or replaced. If I can ever get some of these other projects out of my way I’ll be back to working on mine

I think I still have a manual for it, otherwise I'll hit up eBay for a Chiltons.

But I'll prob be ignoring the most of the electrical for now, it runs and drives, just like crap. The previous owner did not treat it well.

The timing is currently out and the distributor is stuck, so that's one project, another is getting the speedo, interior lights, and steering fixed. It's SUPER vague when driving, it's almost undrivable with how much is wanders.

The cab is almost rusted out too, so I'll be doing some rot replacement work. But the frame looks brand new. Dump bed is good too. Unfortunately 2wd.

EVTM is way better than anything else for tracing out electrical. It’s the factory electrical troubleshooting manual.

My cab is pretty solid. The bed needs some patching. Mine is also a 2wd with a factory limited slip and with some more aggressive rear tires it’s actually surprisingly capable. Back when I did concrete construction I drove an 89 that was a virtual twin to this one that I have, same color and all (dark metallic blue).

So, not to put thoughts into your head on the dump truck, but I have considered the thought of rolling a 4x4 front axle under mine and getting a divorced NP-205 transfer case so I wouldn’t have to change the transmission. Take a couple custom driveshafts to work and a bit of fabrication…

Or just go electric pump and is a rusted out donor F-250 or f350 for your swap. I've thought about doing either one. Still unsure. I can get a four wheel drive dump truck for less than $5,000.

I would probably have more than that into the swap if I include sweat equity. Of course if I did that with this current job, I'd probably be somewhere around 10 grand.

Yeah, the one main reason why I’m not so inclined to buy a different dump truck is that I know the entire history of the one I own. I’m not buying someone else’s problem. Well, I mean technically I did, but my dad was the original owner so I know literally everything there is to know about it from the day it drove off a dealer’s lot.

My F-150 I bought from like the 3rd or 4th owner. I had considered buying an F-250 extended cab with a 7.3, but I was worried about my budget and the regular cab F-150 was cheaper. Well, in the first two years of owning the F-150 I sunk almost $3k in parts in it because it wasn’t in as good of condition as I thought and it really wasn’t as good as the seller said it was. That was a learning experience. Maybe I should have went with the F-250, maybe it would have been just as much of a problem child though.
 
A grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't. LOL
