1 Ton YJ Crawler build

thinking about a goat built type chassis

Got my goatbilt order in as well and picked up a new steering pump from them that'll work with full hydro or assist. I am still planning on keeping the assist and getting a new box, but we'll see.

Picking up a 4L60 tomorrow morning. Today I'm going to start working on my checklist to start planning out assembly

thinking about a goat built type chassis

I'd get a trail lizard if I was going to get a chassis right now i think, with the U doors

The size is small but not crazy small. One of my friends is building one and I'm jealous

damn.

that is a nice piece for sure.

....forgot how pricey stuff gets....not something we would consider for 5 grand. he will just build it.

my tubing bender is missing. i am still hoping to find it....and at least the 1 5/8 die. i think i have 60 feet of docal laying around.

he wants a small side by side-ish buggy to beat on because i been chewin his ass about tearing up the bronco....and wants it to be streetable....

so i am leaning awd roadster....maybe consider subi powered bug chassis....caged as needed running xj axles so paperwork is easy.

or just build a 4 whizzer ranger powertrain running xj stuff and plating it in sd....

and yeah....i know this will probably lead to a 100k buggy...but i will continue to lie to myself believing that will be a him problem.

that said...i looked at the subigearz conversion deal and running a subi diff up front like the vanagon guys

Feel like all the buggies are crazy now. All the JHF stuff is coming out at like $150k all in ..

I just saw a samurai chassis recently, going to have to find it again. Designed to run a sami or Toyota engine and fabricated axles for f/r steer. Was pretty cool, sort of like a moon buggy with a sami hood

Got my transmission today. Was recently rebuilt by *the* local guy for GM transmissions.. watched and the seller dropped the price, snagged it up. Very happy with the deal

Was a bitch to get the torque converter lined up right, but got it on and got it mostly attached to the motor. Need to drill and tap an upper one and figure out the correct size for the bottom ones at the pan

Got the motor mounts painted up and did some rust converter on the tub while I have everything out. Got a surprise package from Goat Built today with my brackets and steering pump

looks like a 65 or 70. or just a late 60? hopefully its 65/70 goodies

Listed as a 1998 4L60, but when I started looking at it more it's a little...odd. It's right at the production cutoff for some of the changes from what I read. And it was also rebuilt by *the* local guy, so it has updated internals like a shift kit and 300m input/output shafts

Going to have to do something for a VSS since they came on the transfer case in this era, assuming this https://www.advanceadapters.com/5091 from AA but I need to reach out to them to check. Going to pull that tail housing too because I'm not certain it's stock. but I need a sensor to go with the holley system and they dont play well with the atlas from what I've read at least

I'm going to get the brackets and alternator and PS pump installed and make sure that's all good, and then I suppose I'll put the driveline in and start getting things figured out i suppose

Been thinking about fuel delivery a lot. I have a motobilt fuel cell already, and previous I used an external walbro pump. I liked how easy it was to diagnose or swap if I have issues, but it's loud possibly getting hit by rocks. I am leaning towards using another in tank pump, something like https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Univ...-Pump-Module-Retrofit-EFI-LS-Swap,227433.html because it works with my existing fuel setup. My current one uses a TJ pump and only delivers about 30 PSI so that's not going to work with the LS.

Then I can mount a regulator like thishttps://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-Deluxe-AN6-GM-LS-Swap-Fuel-Filter-Regulator-58-PSI,375656.html where I would have mounted the pump

Throwing these links here so I can reference later when I cross the fuel bridge

Focus this week will be getting the trans ready and getting intake parts, cleaning fuel injectors, double checking to make sure I've replaced all my sensors for the motor before I drop it in and changing them gets way harder

there is a few kits for the vss.

another thing about the 4l80 i like was the speed sensor placement.. but they are definitely heavier. shitty over drive and first gear. and the connector can get beat up by the driveshaft ...

for a buggy the 70 is a good way to go with some parts.

only thing better is the 6l80...but its a buggy...not a cruiser.

if cell is easily accessed then in tank is the way to go...even regulation. just from leak/safety perspective.

if cell is a pia to access then external where you can play with it is preferred. anything electric needs quick access if possible.

even my ranger is setup like that. all external. regulator and pump/filtration out where you can deal with it. i have a manifold up front for other stuff...but never upgraded the engine so its just there.

but diesel/oils are not as dangerous as gasoline.

i like the holley efi...it is fairly tolerant of fuel systems as long as psi is set right. i have screwed that up more than once.

Yeah, mine is in the backseat, super easy to get to, it's set up where the back seat used to be and I've got space the mount the regulator there too so it's nice and clean and reasonably protected from water/rocks/mud. One thing I hated in my buggy was screwing around with the pickups in the tank - had fuel issues one day and couldn't figure it out. Eventually found out I had a crack in my pickup tube so when the fuel dropped below a half tank or so I was sucking air. Getting into it was such a pain to get that fixed up
