My 02 rangers power dome hood seems heavyier than my 93 f-150s hood ?

I had something like a power dome on my 2003 Edge. The designers put a distinctive crease right down the center, perhaps a small style change to distinguish it from the rest. It was heavy, so I swapped it out for the basic aluminum version before I had the whole truck repainted.

Unless it was aftermarket, that was THE power dome. As it pertains to Rangers, the power dome was the stock hood on the 2001-2003 torsion bar Rangers.

Yup, and if it's what we are talking about, it weighed a ton too. Maybe even more

I didn't know the power dome hood had any relation to the torsion bars. I always thought it came with the 4.0 SOHC during the years the power dome hood was available. I have no information to base that on though.

The weight of the hood never bothered me. I do like the looks of it.

I have no information either, but I think that the Power Dome hood is a little different than the Edge hood, although both have a distinctive crease down the center. Both are made from fiberglass or composite materials. I would not have bothered to swap hoods at all except I was pulling parts from the junkyard anyway in preparation for a new paint job. The junkyard hood looked newer and needed less prep. Much to my surprise it was lighter too.

I guess technically it came on 2001-2003 Rangers that were 4x4 or had the Edge package. Both 4x4 and Edge package for that year range had torsion bars, and all torsion bar Rangers were one or the other. Ergo, it came on torsion bar trucks.

There's a reason I switched to that hood as well, and it certainly wasn't weight savings. :icon_thumby:

Just going from the stock aluminum 99 hood to the powerdome, the weight difference is very apparent.

Nope. That is the powerdome hood as far as Rangers are concerned. I'm sure that there are other powerdome hoods out there as well. As far as I am aware it is not an official Ford term, but something that consumers came up with tho differentiate between the two styles of hood.

With the face lift in 2004, they replaced the hoods with another hood similar in style to the powerdome. Not only is the front edge different to meet the grill, the "dome" is also lower in relation to the 01-03 hoods. There was also no need to differentiate between hood types since the same hood was used on all 04-11 rangers regardless of options. That said, I'm sure that the trem has carried over to them as well.

That seems about right right and the Power Dome.

This is an '02 XLT(?) with a 4.0 and torsion bars.

The Ranger in the background is a 4.0 Power Dome with two fake hood scoops. Very heavy!

For what it's worth, this is my '03 3.0 Edge when I first bought it. Note the crease down the center of the hood and the Edge decal barely visible on the pickup bed. If I remember correctly the power bulge for the 4.0s was slightly different. They both may have had the crease through the middle, but he hood for the Edge seems to be flush along the back. The Power Bulge was raised..

From what I can see through the paint shine, your hood looks the hood on my 2011. It's all steel.

Maybe it was. I don't remember. Nice looking Ranger!

There are power domes in composite as well. The profile of the dome might different on them. I know some were cowl induction type hoods but I suspect those were aftermarket hoods.

That makes sense. Sometimes too, it seems as though Ford would raid their parts bin.

When it comes to the Ranger, they raided the parts bin a lot.
