What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

I've had clutch shudder since I installed the new Centerforce clutch with the new engine 5k miles ago. I have no time to pull the tranny and check, so I bit the bullet and took it to my mechanic to have them check it out. I have a feeling in installed the friction disc backwards. Since it is a dual material clutch, there is a right and wrong way.

i dont think you can install those backwards.

the weights hang up and vibrate though.

That's a big part of why I stuck with their (centerforce) stock friction disc and the weighted pressure plate, it works FANTASTIC, zero complaints, kinda regret buying a replacement but I went in knowing if the old one was good it would go on the '97 when it's clutch wears out. 12 years and a bunch of abuse and the friction disc was 0.007" thinner than the brand spanking new version...

Progress has been slow on the various projects because of the cold. I’m a feeble old man, but more specifically I have some neck damage/nerve damage which messes with my right arm and hand when it’s cold. I’m working with the doctor, but I think I’m heading for surgery sometime this spring. Scares the crap out of me.

Anyway, with the light workload, I’ve been doing a lot of planning and organizing, my fleet and my projects and my schedule. That led me to a couple “follow the rules” questions, and thoughts on the Carlisle Truck Nationals the first weekend in August.

Am I breaking any rules if I start a separate thread for building the Road ‘Raith Kasket Kitchen? It has Ranger wheels, and it’ll be pulled by Rangers. You know I’m making the matching trailer to the Missing Linc, which makes sense to leave in that thread. And I’m building the converter dolly for the Road Ranger, so that makes sense to leave it there. While the ‘Raith will be painted to match the Missing Linc, it’s really a completely independent project. i’ve put a few comments under the Missing Linc, which has already confused a couple people. (And we all know this is very important, historically significant work.)

Other than a couple sketches, I haven’t even started it, and I already have two people who want to rent it.

Second, regarding the Carlisle, Truck Nationals, is it too early to start a link for that? My interest is just a discussion to spur interest, I’m not volunteering to lead anything, but since that’s a TRS event now, nor do I want to walk on anyone’s toes. I wouldn’t want to start a discussion thread that would interfere with the official announcement and proceedings. I’m happy to team with whoever is going to be in charge of it, establish some ground rules to promote the event, the way TRS wants, and to spur interest.

Inquiring minds would like to know…

Yo Rick...

Geez it didn't like to spin yesterday with the 15w40 and 7°F. I was going to wait til it warmed up a bit to do the daily driver schedule again, but some newer vehicles in the fleet were being uncooperative.

When I created a build thread for my trailer, I played it safe and put it in the non-Ranger related subforum. I may have the name wrong. Look for the 2007 Red Trailer thread.

I scored 4 More Center caps to match the ones I like on eBay for $30 delivered. They have a little overspray of black spray paint on them, but that should come off pretty easily.

I needed eight, that gives me nine, so I probably won’t buy more than a dozen more if I find them on a good deal.

I would have gone that route, but this was the only offering I could find from them for my rig.

hoses? not likely.....heater core....yeah.
They ended up flushing the hoses and core again. Got about a pound of gummed up gasket sealer out. Works great now. Thinking sealer got push into the core when they did the engines flushes replacing the gaskets.

Yeah, I think that's all they offered in a kit for mine too but I found the two part numbers sold separate that worked for what I needed... don't know if there's a setup for the 4L flywheel like there is for the smaller one...

Last week I noticed a weird rubbing noise coming from the back of the truck. I thought it was just due to bushings making noise in damp weather. I also noticed what appeared to be one of the wheels slipping with a slight knock when taking off from a stop, It occurred to me that both problems started at around the same time. Another oddity was it one tire appeared to break traction on wet pavement if I got on the gas too hard. I though it might be the slip yoke binding. So, after work today I rocked the bed of the truck a bit to see if I could duplicate the noise. I then went under the truck to continue tracking down the squeek and heard that knock, which came from the shock absorber, which was missing a bolt, which I used a bit of locktite on when I installed them. I then went to the other rear shock to pull out the bolt so I could find or buy a matching bolt. However, that bolt was missing too.

I realize fasteners come loose. But, they have been on there for five years. Why would BOTH of them come loose and go missing at the same time? It's hard to tell, but it appears as if the dirt on one of the shocks has been disturbed. As it someone grabbed it to pull themselves under the truck. I know this sounds a bit out there, but do you think someone could have taken them out?

Do do do do, do do do do….

Twilight zone stuff. If it was me, I would’ve just cut your brake lines. Anybody you pissed off lately?

My experience with fancy clutches like that is that they love to chatter.. I had a cerametallic clutch in my old outback and It definitely preffered to be worked 100% different than an organic disc.
