The open end on mine face backwards as well.
One thing that might help with puck wear is a trick I picked up from the Aussies. They occasionally grease where those pucks go. I used some silicone brake grease in those spots on the new springs I hung on the 2011. I never did look at the old springs to see how they faired. I might have to go do the before I get rid of them.
