Rustys shop thread....

T
The lights im looking at come in packs of 4. Maybe ill just order 2 packs and itll be like working on the sun lol.

Im using plywood for the new wall and ceiling, probably 1/4 or 3/8 in. Its as cheap as OSB and OSB bothers me for asthetic appeal.

Im contemplating a 6ft wide or so sliding door on the new wall to bring the mower or tractor over to the shop side during the winter so i dont have to deal with the big slider on the outside being frozen.

Thoughts on that?
If you have the cash consider a roll-up or French doors, you will save wall space.

French door is 2 swing doors that open from the middle.

A press is like a tractor- buy the next one bigger than you think you need. I bought a 20 ton press from Harbor Freight(mistake #1) and found out when I tried to press the wheel bearing of a Mustang axle that the opening wasn't big enough for the axle flange to fit through. I didn't notice that when I bought it. I was able to press the new bearing on with it, though. I bought a motor crane with fold up legs and it makes storage a lot easier. I'ts Chinese so I replaced all the bolts with ones that I trust.
the Harbor Freight presses are pretty decent. Get your 20%of coupon and go when they’re on sale and get the big one.
If you get a press, get some good arbor plates with it too... the HF ones are well known for exploding under pressure since they're made of cast iron.

Just throwing my 0.02$ in with the press and hoist info. I have a 12 ton HF and the plates suck but it has been capable of doing what I need to do. I still wish I had the 20ton. I have one of their 2ton folding engine hoists and have been impressed. I've only used it a few times, and only on a tiny Subbie motor and a Jeep 3.7L V6 without any issues. I'll be trying it on an old Pontiac V8 in a couple weeks so we'll see if it can handle that beast. That's a big motor.

My HF folding engine hoist has no problem lifting my 4bt and ZF trans together. The 4bt is about the same weight as a 460.

Good to know. I'm debating pulling the old ST300 with the engine. Won't weigh much more than your combo.

Oh well...then thats what i was planning on lol. Cept mine will be 'murican doors.:ROFLMAO:

I was planning on a foldable engine hoist just for room issues. A 460 would probably be the heaviest thing id try to lift with it. Good to know

I don't see how a basic shed door would take up more space than French doors? The issue with French doors is you need a solid brace in the middle which would have to be removable if you plan on fitting a lawn mower in the doors. Just get a pair of fence gate hinges and a padlock and be done with it. Don't need no fancy French crap and i'm sure a roll up door would cost 5-10 times more than a basic 2x4 and plywood door. Rusty's shop should = K.I.S.S.

French doors could be secured in the center with a drop pin into the floor and another pin in the upper jam. No center stile needed. The advantage is that each half would be narrower than a single door of same width. That way, they don’t swing into the space nearly as far. That’s better for tight spaces.

To clarify, my motor crane didn't come from harbor Freight, I got it from Summit Racing. The problem with those doors is holding them open if the wind comes up while driving into the shop. If you don't want an overhead door I'd mount them on rollers to slide open as long as the building has enough width. Or I'd sink some posts into the ground to use anchoring he doors open. It'll take less time than fixing the dented quarter panel would.

How about something like this, Takes up 0% extra space and you can open them a little, or a lot.
38396

That looks like the right size for a shop, too.

The doors would be built on the inside partition wall. Wind isnt an issue. If it is nothing a piece of rope and a halter snap cant fix.

He’s talking about doors on an interior wall between two sections of the building. Personally, I would not want sliding doors for that since they would prevent hanging cabinets or installing a work bench along the wall where the doors would need to slide.

Oops. Rusty and I were typing at the same time

Very good point
