Rustys shop thread....

You can get some pretty good LED shop lights from harbor freight. Thats what I have in my little storage/garage i have 2 hanging and one extra thats gonna get hung above my work table. But again my friend lets me use his shop with lifts when he has an open bay. But thats my end goal a 40×30 two bay garage with atleast one lift and a storage room. Air compressor, 220 for welding used oil tank. Water, heat.

That’s exactly what I was building when my wife and I separated last summer. :dntknw:

I have the 4’ Feit brand LED shop lights from Costco in both my garage and basement. I’m really happy with them. They cast a good amount of light, but it’s diffused so it not blinding like a bare LED. The 2 in the laundry room section of the basement have never been shut off... 4 years and counting.

These last 6-8 posts about wiring outlets worry me about how the heck people wire up their own shit.... a breaker for each outlet is overkill... Most corded power tools (with the exception of heat guns) aren't gonna blow a 20a outlet even if you have a 5 guy crew running tools non stop. You can get 220v air compressors cheaper than 110v in my experience. 220v=2 hot wires, 1 neutral, 1 ground. Watch your wiring.... Not sure if you have an RV or trailer but they are 30 or 50 amp outlets BUT they are wired to 110v not 220v. About twice a year we get an RV that was plugged into 220v and they lost their converter, fridge, ac, microwave etc.

I’m not necessarily recommending one outlet per circuit. I put outlets all over the place so they’re handy. Extension cords are dangerous. Many people overload them plus they are trip hazards.

Having multiple circuits makes it more difficult to overload wiring. Do it the way you want as long as it’s safe and follows code. My personal preference as stated earlier would be 3 or 4 twenty amp circuits. One for loads like lights, chargers, stereo, computer, soldering iron, etc. Two or three for general use. If you frequently run a portable space heater, they can pull 12-15 amps. That’s a circuit. You should never design or plan a circuit to be more than 80% loaded. That’s a safety factor. A 120v air compressor can easily run in the 15 amp range. That’s a circuit. Then another for other portable tools. Put extra outlets on each circuit. But be mindful of the load being used on each circuit.

Let’s spend some more of Rusty’s money. What else should he have in this shop?

hydraulic press - 20ton or bigger

Metal shear and brake for when he starts replacing rusty sheet metal

A-frame gantry and chain fall for lifting motors

rockin stereo system

comfortable chair for “contemplating and planning”

refrigerator to keep the Gatorade cool and also for those “after the work is done” beverages to be consumed in the contemplating chair

I do plan on a 12 ton press. Possibly an exhaust bender in the future.

A frames are way to pricey to do the same thing (basically) as a engine hoist which i also plan on.

A stereo and a chair are given.

Fridge? Its 80 feet maybe back into the house, i aint wastin floor space on that lol,

You already need a bigger shop Rusty... Exhaust bender?

Like yesterday... I found a deal I couldn't pass up. I bought a dough rounder for my pizzeria. Which meant I had to remove an 8 foot stainless steel work table to install the rounder and shorter table. My wife told my employees to put the 8 foot table out by the dumpster. NO... it got loaded into the back of my truck for my garage. I don't currently have space... but I'm gonna find and rearrange some space to fit it. Your garage will never be big enough.

A press is like a tractor- buy the next one bigger than you think you need. I bought a 20 ton press from Harbor Freight(mistake #1) and found out when I tried to press the wheel bearing of a Mustang axle that the opening wasn't big enough for the axle flange to fit through. I didn't notice that when I bought it. I was able to press the new bearing on with it, though. I bought a motor crane with fold up legs and it makes storage a lot easier. I'ts Chinese so I replaced all the bolts with ones that I trust.

I once bought a 2 post 10,000lb vehicle lift at auction. I didn't own land or have a garage....

For awhile I rented an old dairy barn. 50' wide by 500' long. It was about 1/2 full when I moved 4 years later! That was quite the yard sale...

Im not looking at fancy ones. I found one thats basically a press. Its not that big.

Right now any press is better then a socket and 6lb shorty sledge i use now.

I thought maybe you were opening up an exhaust shop... "Rusty's Muffler"

Kinda catchy...

the Harbor Freight presses are pretty decent. Get your 20%of coupon and go when they’re on sale and get the big one.

The harbour freight lights are the same I believe.

I was actually looking at one from jegs.

If you get a press, get some good arbor plates with it too... the HF ones are well known for exploding under pressure since they're made of cast iron. I have a giant chunk of 1" mild steel that I'm going to build some out of.

As far as lights go, I have a 30x40 shop, the inside is sheathed with OSB and painted white. I have 12 light fixtures that hold four 4' bulbs, and I'm using Sylvania LED tubes in them that are rated at 2100 lumens. So that's 8400 lumens per fixture, 100,800 lumens total. It's really nice. I wanted to feel like the surface of the sun was just a few feet overhead in terms of light level anyway and it's just about there. You literally cannot have enough lights - especially in a shop like yours where the walls are dark, the light just gets soaked up.

The lights im looking at come in packs of 4. Maybe ill just order 2 packs and itll be like working on the sun lol.

Im using plywood for the new wall and ceiling, probably 1/4 or 3/8 in. Its as cheap as OSB and OSB bothers me for asthetic appeal.

Im contemplating a 6ft wide or so sliding door on the new wall to bring the mower or tractor over to the shop side during the winter so i dont have to deal with the big slider on the outside being frozen.

Thoughts on that?
