Fords and Toyotas have been good to me
I have a 3.73 limited slip 7.5 differential. I have to pull out the pinion gears which are visibly worn. Had major problem with the axle grinding so new problem was in the differntial.

My Question: How do you remove the axle rods? I have removed the pinion bolt and have this S clip in middle that must be removed. There is a sliding bolt in middle that is hitting the ring gear. How do you remove the axles? My goal is to rebuild the differential and am trying to do economically, I will try and upload the pic, but dont have a url

remove "s" clip then slide axle in just a smidgen and remove c clip...

Push the axle in as far as it will go and use a strong magnet or needle nose pliers and pull the C clips off the ends of the shafts.

You shouldn't need to remove the S clip to remove axle shafts. Just remove the cross shaft retaining bolt, and push the cross shaft. It looks like you already started pushing the cross shaft out from that picture. Just push it the rest of the way out. Then you can push the axle shaft in and remove the C-clip.

Thanks for your replies. The Cross shaft is stopping at the gear. I took a picture for that reason. how can I move the gear out of the way? I have also pudhed in on the axle. The S clip goes over both sides. BTW, I have never dones this before, but am willing to take the challenge. I think the cross shaft bolt is the issue. How can I get that gear to move out of the way? There are space washers on the sides but they as long as the axle is there, they cannot be removed. I must be missing something?

The cross shaft might have a flat side, try pushing it out the other direction and then rotating it to see if it has one.

I will definitely reply when I succeed. Cant get to it till tomorrow eve after work.

Success! the bolt does have a flat side but was not releavant. I just needed to push in the axle rod. Doingthis exposed the c - clip which popped off rather easily. I removed the ring gear and bearings with out problems after that. The Chilton manual made it seem like the 3.73 was different that any other axle. THe Chilton manual I used was dead wrong. All I had to do was remove the c clip which was simple.

Thanks.

there is a bolt that secures a shaft through the S-clip in the housing... remove bolt and shaft then push the axle in all the way, turn axle so the the opening of the clip is away from you, then use a magnet remove the C-Clip...
