Clutch/transmission woes

I'm starting to hear a new sound on my '89 Ranger 2.9l 4wd. When I have the clutch depressed the engine purrs like a kitten with no apparent problem. When I release the clutch, however, whether it's in gear or neutral - I hear a fast knocking sound/rattle. I've checked clutch fluid and it's o.k.

I'm the third owner and it's got 130K miles on her. Any help appreciated!

Throw-out bearings can make some strange noises when they start to go, so can the input shaft bearings. Have you checked the gear oil level recently? While it's running, in neutral, with the e-brake locked and tires blocked, and any other safety thing you can think of, crawl under and listen to see if it's coming from the trans itself or if it sounds like it's inside the bell housing close to the back of the motor. My guess would be the trans tho...and don't burn yourself on the pipes while your under there..
