Twister 85 B2 Build

Nothing at all wrong with a reverse rotation.

I wonder if you could just yank the compressor and get a shorter belt, might check into what a 84-85 non-AC Mustang had for a setup to see if it is similar to what you have just minus the compressor or if it is a completely different thing. Shane96Ranger is a big Foxbody nut, you might drop him a line and see if he has heard anything about how to do it.

The late 80's CV setup (also used in a bunch of other big boring cars) in the first pic of my last post is about as simple as simple can get for the basics. One short micro V belt (more traction than just a V belt) runs on four pulleys, crankshaft, WP, PS pump and alternator. All you need is a water pump, pulleys, and one bracket... no tensioners or idlers. You can reuse the stock PS pump and alternator (although a pump with the return out the back instead of diagonally out the bottom fits better)

All you would be giving up though if you could just delete the compressor on yours is the tensioner... and a tensioner isn't really a bad thing to have vs guessing how tight the belt is as you crank on the alt with one hand and try to tighten the lockdown bolt with the other, and repeating that process a couple times until you get it right (at least that is how I did it)

Awesome, somewhere I got that you couldn't run the reverse rotation pump :icon_confused:

I already PM'd you back on this, but I'll also add here if you don't mind.

Just running a shorter belt won't work. The belt will rub on itself at the water pump. You can eliminate the A/C compressor, but it requires either a dummy pulley or for you to relocate the P/S pump to a higher position. This can be done by finding a Non-A/C Mustang or Mark VII and taking the P/S bracket, or by buying the Ford Racing bracket (M-8511-A50). They are the same bracket.

Here's an idea of what you are looking at for belt routing:

EDIT 2: Here's some pics with it installed. Lots more clearance!

Thanks :icon_thumby:

I cant find a ac bypass pulley on any parts stores website :icon_confused:

Dorman makes one for about 25 bucks:

NOTE: This just bolts in place of the compressor.

Hmm, I don't see his that would work with the setup I have. The air comp I have bolts to two brackets. It I was to bolt that where the air comp it is would be too short, or maybe I am looking at it wrong.

If yours is the 84 FEAD, it may not work. The compressor is indeed different starting in 1985, but I'm not familiar with how it mounts. It says in the application tab (in the Summit link) that it will work on an 84 though.

EDIT: The bolts that my compressor are held on with enter from the front (the compressor is threaded). This bracket would have the bolts enter from the rear.

Well they have them in stock at my autozone, ill pick on up and look at it. I went to jegs website (i cant navigate summits very well), for an 84 mustang it popped up the one you posted and when i searched for an 85 and 86 i got the ford racing kit you posted.

I wondered if Autozone might carry it if it's a Dorman part. Hopefully it works out for you.

I found this for the Dorman part.

And this for the PS pump relocation.

I have most of the FEAD from a two eyed Foxbody if you end up needing the later bracket.

85, isn't the P/S pump pretty close the the steering gear box as it is? I would personally relocate the pump rather than replace the compressor with a pulley. It also is a cleaner look IMO. Your P/S bracket is different than mine, so you might need help from 85's FEAD if you go that route. 99% of my experience is 86-93 FEAD's.

Yes, it is kind of tight. With my first setup the only problem it gave me was the outlet on the pump went down diagonally, the hose would pinch off against the gearbox because it couldn't make the turn. I got by with it by putting a 90* fitting in the return hose, there is a different pump out there that has the outlet going straight out the back that I didn't know about until after I had it together and running.

Fitment is hard to guestimate and things always vary swap to swap (for some reason my engine sits a lot farther ahead on the frame than most), the stock Mustang brackets look like the pump may be a tad lower than what I had (and also way wider) but I think with the right pump it would still work. Given the option of one or the other (and they are both fairly cheap) I do agree moving the pump is a better choice than adding another pulley though.

I'm pretty sure the bracket that Twister has puts the pump lower than mine is - and maybe even further away from the crank pulley.

I think I would need this style bracket for the use of that kit from ford racing.

Fits Mustang Model Years: 1979,1980,1981,1982,1983,1984,1985,1986, 1987,1988,1989,1990,1991,1992,1993

Note: 1979-1984 requires use of 1985 or newer power steering pump bracket

From my link with the Ford Racing bracket kit.

U-Wrench-It charged me $35 for the whole FEAD. The tank on the pump is busted but the brackets are all good.

I don't know if you go down there much, it was off the red car that was almost folded in half they have had forever.

If I go with that, how would you want for the power steering bracket?
