I'm a brand new member, although I used to post here as 85rangerinSK many, many years ago. I do have a 1990 Ranger that I'm sure will generate some discussion, but my housemate has a 1997 Aerostar that I need some help with, at the moment. Which forum can I ask questions regarding it in?

Thanks! I'm looking forward to some good discussions.

Welcome back to TRS.
The Aerostar shares a fair amount with the RBV. Post in the general section unless your question is more specific, for example engines or brakes.

Thanks, guys. It's sort of engine related, but not specific to the engine itself. I'm told the Idle Control Motor is bad (won't idle). Where is it on the 4.0 engine, and how hard is it to replace?

This is it http://imgur.com/a/yyRQV

I would first check to make sure that it is that first, if you hold the throttle open a bit does it idle? If so it's more than likely indeed the IAC.

That looks like it's on the side of the valve cover (left side), about middle, just forward of the oil dipstick, yes? Two bolts, and a wiring harness, and it's free?

It will idle if you hold the throttle open, yes.

Correct, just two bolts and the two wire plug. There is also a small gasket there, make sure that gets replaced when you get the new IAC, they will act weird without the gasket.

It's not accessible from under the hood (surprise, surprise!). I found three clips that hold the doghouse (?) on, released them, and there's something else still holding it.

Some times you have to pull down and kind of twist it.

That, and remove the ABS computer, according to a thread I found on another Ford Truck forum. I think I found it looking under the hood, but it's a PITA to get to. It seems like EVERYTHING is in the way (Thanks, Ford!). THIS: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/28402-92-aerostar-doghouse.html is the info I found.

Even the owner's manual doesn't tell me how to remove the doghouse, yet Ford says that there are owner maintainable parts that would be at that end of the engine.

I *think* this is it, here.....
