Is it possible to swap out my awd t-case in my 1998 explorer and put the manual transfer in it so it would be 4x4 not AWD?

In my 97 Explorer, I took out the BW 4405 transfer case and installed a manual BW 1354 transfer case. I had to install a front drive shaft from a 1st gen Explorer to make it work, as well as shorten the splines on the slip shaft an inch or so. The only thing is, I am pretty sure my Check Engine light stays on because of the swap, but that does not bother me, it may bother you. I have daily driven it for close to a year now with no problems.

You must give some specifics if you want correct answers...If your referring to the explorer in your profile with a v8 then the above information isnt correct. You must specify the engine first...

If your referring to a v6 explorer, then you first must realize that the transfer case isnt awd, but rather a part-time case that transfers power on demand when needed via a clutch.

Sorry, forgot to mention that my 97 has the 4.0 V6. Thanks for catching that Yellowsplash.

The ideal transfer case would be a 44-06. Go to explorer forums and search 44-06 swap. All the info is there...
