I'm in the process of swapping a 302 in my Ranger. I ditched my 2.3t. I'm wondering if anyone has used a ZF5 in a Ranger behind a 302/351. I know people have used the m5od but the ZF5 has its advantages. It has a granny 1st. Its also known to be a stronger trans. I have read that it will not fit without transmission tunnel modifications. I will not ever do a body lift so that is out of the question. I am just curious if anyone has used this transmission and what did they have to do to make it fit?

Thanks!

Thanks! I think I'll just buy it and run it. If it hits the body I'll cut the tunnel and make it fit!

If not I can use the trans for my 4bt conversion on my f150!

Read carefully as he got a diesel one and has to change some things internally to get it to work, I think it was the input shaft.

No worries this is the sbf ZF5 trans. It will work on a 351, 302, and 300. Its currently in the guys truck. I am going to drive it today to make sure it shifts then he's going to pull it.

The 460/diesel ZF5 are different.

You will need a body lift unless you want to cut out a large portion of floor and possibly firewall. I had one behind my 396W and had a body lift and the thing barely fit. I can't find any pictures of it, but the width isn't much concern the the height. Even with a 3 inch body lift part of the shift tower will still stick up through the floor. This pic is a ZF vs. M5OD...

The bellhousing/firewall area is tight in a fullsize, I would suggest a body lift.

I liked my ZF at first. I knew my engine made more torque than the 470ft lbs the best ZF5 is rated at. Then I had a clutch explosion. Then I realized a manual doesn't like deep water and mud. So I sold the ZF before I blew it up and went with a C6

It's like cramming 10lbs of sausage into a casting made for 5.

Good thing is it has two pto ports that you can use but I don't know of anybody that uses them on their ranger. I figured they would be good for a hydraulic winch.
