If the valves were bent would that slow it down? but bent valves should make noise. the video sounded sort of normal.

I went to the local JY. He printed out a sheet of what 4.0's would fit. I will post a copy of it. it was some rangers and some b4000. I assume this is becasue a few "things" might need to be swapped over from other years/models.

I did a little research and can not really find out when the "timing chain issue" was fixed. some places say 2003, however I have a 2004 and "I think" my chain guide, etc is bad. Does anyone know for sure when they were fixed. I would rather try and find an engine that will not have this issue. I see a bunch of 03 and 04's in CL with bad 4.0's. TIA

If the early model SOHC timing chain issue was fixed under warranty then it won't be an issue.
This means the "new" parts Ford redesigned fixed the early wear out issues.
So it was not an engine issue just a bad design on the parts bolted to the engine.

This is why the later models didn't have the issue, because they had the "new" parts installed from the factory.

The reason I mention this is because you may get a better deal on an older low mile SOHC, then you can upgrade it with the new parts and know there won't be a timing chain issue.
Vs. buying a newer SOHC and hoping you won't have a timing chain issue.

And just as a heads up if you go with new timing chain kit, there are two kinds:
Engines with balancer shaft
Engines without balancer shaft

Good ideas! I wonder if there is a way to tell if the chain was replaced with the upgraded part. I read a little bit about the repair, it seems tricky. I will read more about it.

I have found a few 2001, 2002 engines and if I buy one of them I would redo the timing system as Ron suggested. Anyone have any thoughts on what timing kit to buy? RA has a DNJ for $190 or a Cloyes for $250?

Ok I located a 2009 4.0 out of a 4x4 Ranger with 85k. Junk yard computer is not matching it as a doable swap. Does anyone know if this will swap into my 04 and what I might need to change on it! Thanks for the help! Will the motor mounts and tranny bolt right up. Sorry for the dumb questions. Just want to be sure before I buy it.

Yes, tranny and motor mounts would be the same.

Thanks Ron! Just picked up a 2009 from a 4x4 Ranger w/85k for $800. It is the one in the picture that they are asking $860 for. I pick it up next week.

Swap is almost done, hopefully tommorrow. We pulled the VC off the old engine and this is what we found.

She's Done. So far so good! Just waiting for the EVAP system to finish. The other system are all complete. No codes.

For future members I swapped in a 2009 4.0 from a 4wd Ranger into this 2004 4.0 Ranger. The engine I got was a little rusty. The tech pulled everything off my old engine and swapped it onto the 2009. Intake, injectors, harness, exhaust manifold, waterpump. Tstat housing.

The orange/rust colored chain guide is busted.
