i have not yet . although i have been gathering parts and information for the conversion . below is some of the information i have come up with

you'll need the 2.3l motor mounts . engine wiring harrness . and the 2.3 computer (behind the passengers side front kick panel) . also

for your year ranger (1988) you either have an a4ld (automatic) or a mazda m50d (manual) transmission

the 2.3 and most of v6s ran different bellhouseing bolt patterns and starter motor locations

if you have the a4ld i believe you can unbolt the bellhouseing and go buy a 2.3l bell houseing and bolt it onto your 2.9 transmission . if im wrong on this someone please chime in

if you have the m50d you have a few more options
(1) you can do like i have done and find a 4cyl 4wd manual transmission from a 1983-1997 ranger and swap the whole transmission out
(2) find a 4cyl 2wd tranny and swap the output shaft and tailhouseing from your 2.9 tranny to the 2.3 tranny

(3) i have yet to find this exact conversion done. but you could find a 2.3 with a 2wd tranny and run a divorced transfer case from a old nissan truck or something simalir to that

hope this helps and if you have anyother questions i'd be glad to answer them

I have heard that the 5.0 bellhousing is the same as the 2.3L could you get the conversion plate and just mount in the 2.3L?

The 5.0 bell housing is not the same as the 2.3l. Use a bell housing from a 2.3/a4ld mustang as said above.

I know this is an old thread. I just needed to correct that.:D
