We didn't start having that problem repeatedly until the newer direct injected engines (and that showed it's face worse when the boat was ran out of gas...), the injectors are very different and don't flow as much under low pressure so they don't prime themselves well and thus don't flow vapor... this is of course on GM engines but liquid pumps don't pump vapor well which was a big portion of the issue.
