I have an 02 4x4 4.0 v6 and i dont know which axle i have. I thought i had a 7.5 rear but this weekend i had to replace the rear seal for the diff gasket and i had to get the 8.8 gasket because the 7.5 wouldn't fit. I didn't think that Ford made a 8.8 with 10" drums (which is what i have). So i some one could please help me with this because if i do have an 8.8 is there a conversion kit so i can put disc brakes on.
Thanks

All 4.0L V6 trucks (thru '09) came with the 8.8" rear axle w/10" drum brakes.

Not sure about a disc conversion kit available, although with a little modification to the backing plate flanges, it is possible to get Explorer disc brakes to work on it. The '10 Ranger disc brakes will not fit however.

you have a 27spline 8.8" axle. there are a couple companies that make kits but will be expensive. ballistic fab makes weld on caliper brackets. and you can find rotors that would fit the lugs and go from there with modding the backplate. you will also have to mod the brake line to go to the caliper and work for the parking brake

I believe the determing factor on what size brakes the truck got was based on the GVW, not the engine size. I think the break point was 4450 lbs.

All 4.0 trucks got the 10" brakes.

Because they only built the 8.8" axles with 10 brakes.

And don't waste your time trying to find a gasket...the only gasket ford ever used was RTV silicone. Permatex Ultra Grey is my weapon of choice.

this needs rephrased quite a bit.....but are you asking if there's a conversion kit for the 8.8?

There are kits out there....but they're REALLY pricey. Instead, search "cobra rear disc" or "mustang rear disc". Swapping on SN95 Stang rears onto a Ranger 8.8 or 7.5 (both 28spline) is really easy to do and is almost a total bolt-on swap. Only requires a hackjaw and maybe a double flare tool. A 4.5" grinder with a cut-off wheel works alot better than a hacksaw. Can be done for under $100 if you shop wisely. Cobra's are more spendy, but you're getting I think 2" more rotor too. Still...in the end, price out is ALOT cheaper than the EBC/EEBC kits. Putting on expos requires ALOT more work/modification than the Stangs.

Here's a thread for you to take a peek at....

Think that's just a myth. Take a look at car-part.com and you can find thousands in JY's across the country with the 8.8 and 9" brakes.
