I am knocking my head against a wall here looking for the stupid Speed Sensor on my transmission. :bawling:

All the diagrams tell me I have one, auto zone says I have one, and my dash gauges are all electrical, so I must have one.... :annoyed:

WHERE!? :pissedoff:

Note: I have an appointment to have it replaced on thursday morning for $100, but Id rather do it myself and save myself $70 if I can still

1999 Ford Ranger 5spd auto fleet model with a 3.0

If the ABS light isn't on the sensor isn't the issue.

The ABS module is the only thing that sees that signal directly. It then relays the information off to the PCM, GEM, IC, and cruise modules. If the ABS light is out, the trans shifts ok, and assuming the IC is working, there is a break in the wiring somewhere after splice 139.

If it is just the VSS, just got one this week from RockAuto for $7.17 and two days to my door, for a 2000. One little bolt to remove on the top of rear end.

alright cool, I have a plan with a buddy from auto zone to do it on thursday after he gets off work, that should fix everything right?

just for note, I probably will anyways, but should I disconnect the battery before doing this?

also, just for reference, does anyone know the size bolt?

Bolt is a 10mm.

The only thing unhooking the battery will do is reset the clock. Don't waste your time.

alright, thanks everyone!! saved me again =p

While Im here, any ideas on why Im getting only 13mpg? at under 50k miles (confirmed the mileage between 47,000 - 49,000 with the previous owner). Spark plugs look in good shape, and the only things I can think of causing problems is either the VSS or needing an oil change... Id hate to think compression, but I wont put money on that one, I get plenty of power.

no, but I will tell you to clean the area first. dirt will fall into the hole as the old sensor is pulled out.

the 3.0 in my 2000 always got lousy mileage, but its a 4x4 auto.
