Side to side?

A loose wheel bearing (repack it!) or tie rod end.

Get a buddy to shake the wheel so you can look behind it at what is actually moving.

No, I think those are sealed. But you still should make sure the play is in the wheel bearing before you try to replace it. Tie rod ends are also likely candidates. Also check the stupid stuff like loose lugnuts. Don't laugh too hard; it happens.

its a sealed unit if it is 4wd, if it is 2wd then it is a tapered bearing setup. When you ask a question it is helpfull if you include some basic information about your truck.

Sounds like the wheel bearing assembly is gone and needs to be replaced.

These bearings are sealed and cannot be serviced. Check out the Tech Section for a great writeup on how to replace the 98-00 4x4 wheel bearings.

One thing that i notice when wheel bearings are going, with that much play is that you should notice your breaks feel funky like you should have to give it an extra pump on the break peddle. Not only should you check side to side but top and bottom as well. Its not a hard job if you have to replace them anyways.
