had my wheels off on my 03 4x4 and i could grab onto the rotor and have some forward and backwards play (using two hands, pushing with one and pulling with the other) but only in the horizontal plane, not the vertical. what is worn out?

update 12/20 it was the tie rod, had it brake on the highway, no serious damage but i could have saved my self a headache if i didnt wait. was making some popping noises when turning under load, watch out for that

What you are describing is typically a tie rod, play fore and back in the vertical range, not all the way around. The steering is what keeps that range tight, and you have a rack and pinion type. check the links coming off of your rack onto your knuckles (part that attaches the steering links to where the wheel pivots) for wear. Should have an inner and an outer on both side.

If both sides are doing it, check your rack bushings and bolts as well.
