I have a 1987truck Ford ranger won't start whole truck isn't getting power yet battery is charged. Starter makes a weird sound would that have anything to do with it? Started yesterday and now won't.

No way the whole truck is dead if the solenoid got power from your ignition switch - can you describe the sound the starter is making? Is it a constant clicking?

a weird noise isn't descriptive, are you sure it's coming from the starter also?

my bet, bad ground... follow the neg terminal from the battery to wherever it goes, look at the bare wire coming out of the insulator on both ends, if it's green, brown, foamy, or anything else other than nice or decent looking copper, it's done, and is most likely your issue... if the connections at the end to the battery and frame and/or block are loose and or corroded, clean it put it back together, try again...

if that doesn't work, follow the same thing with the positive cable... i can't remember what years did what, but on most earlier ford vehicles, there is a small round solenoid with 2 large posts, and 1 or 2 small posts, those go bad fairly often, and are quite cheap to replace... it will usually be bolted to the drivers side fender you can take a screw driver and cross one of the small bolts to the large one with the wire coming off the battery, if you hear the same noise, see if it's coming from that device... if it is you either have a supply issue (bad wiring, bad connections, dead battery, or dead solenoid)

my bet, it's one of those things above... has it been hard to crank recently? if it has slowly been getting worse, 99% chance it's wiring/connections if not, 99% chance it's the solenoid

Funny that this came up. I just got home from trying to figure out why my nephews 88 ranger would not start. The battery is new, he replaced the starter a couple of months ago and we just replaced the solenoid tonight and still got nothing. I will have him check what the wires look like tomorrow. :icon_confused:
