I have pulled everything out of my ranger and am starting work on my 302. I have decided to go with the m5od-r2 transmission what transfer case should I use that will fit and also will I need custom front and rear drive shafts??

I'm using the NP205, but the serious wheelers think it does not have enough low gear. I've seen 4406s, NP208s, and 1356s used. The 4406 is slightly smaller than the 1356 and will fit better. I also use the M5ODR2, but mine came out of a 5.0 F150 and I had to get a 1/4" thick adapter plate made to connect the trans to the T/C because the webbing inside the trans interfered with the T/C. Others have not had this problem but may have used a different model year trans or it came from the a V-6. My combination allowed me to use a single piece stock drive shaft in the rear from a 2000 Ranger. Had to have the front shortened a couple inches and also had to get a different coupler for the front of the T/C from Denny's Driveshaft.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
its sometimes possible to reuse one of the shafts depending on where you put the powertrain and the original powertrain combination. but the fullsize t case is larger and its rear outut to front output spread is different.

i assume you are using a 99 and its stock front axle, all you can do is mount it up and measure. its possible you will find oem applications that can be fitted if you do the work involved to those ends...i find its easier to just have what i want made if the easy to use stuff wont work.

another option is to make your own adapter tail housing and spud adapter to put a 2wd trans in place. they used to make a 28 spline and 31 spline to 25 spline spud adapter.. actually a whole kit for the m5od and c6 application. that would allow you to cut the 2wd trans tail shaft to suit your needs to keep the t case in its current position allowing retention of the stock drive shafts. it was not a big seller and discontinued.

i use a similar method to put a ford transfer case behind my 4l80 gm trans in my ranger. with the 208 though there is a gm input that swaps in place once you tear it down....as i recall the jeep and gm inputs wont work in the 1350 borgs which would widen shelf spuds already available.

then again you could adapt a 3500/3550 trans and t case combo or 4500 from a gm. finding good parts is usually the biggest problem. manual transmissions are not very common these days.

just the 10 in standard version unless your building power. basically just order the fly/clutch combo for the v8 and m5 whatever year the m5 is.
