Sad but Ford got their money out of that car. The frame is from the late 70sand and the body style has not changed too much in 10 years. I would imagine that Ford will do something with the Taurus chassis for a police interceptor...
That was the plan since they unveiled the taurus..

You guys are way too young to remember the first Crown Vic's. Really got the sales moving at Ford in 55-56. My grade school teacher had one with the green sun roof.

Dave of the Nord
Way, way too young, dad was born in '57... :D

Really unless I got one for cheap I don't think I would have any interest in having a newer one. A guy in my car club has a '56 with a 351C in it (and otherwise looks stock)... it is a really nice car.

Around here, they're all switching over to the Dodge/Chrysler stuff.

I like my CV PI, btw!
Damn, I gotta sharpen up my skills a bit more. I poked fun of you a little in my previous post, and it didn't even phase you!

I actually am a previous owner of a Crown Vic. It was very short lived because it's main purpose was to be rallied. Let me tell you, this thing did some off-roading that would make you all proud. We went over stuff that you could feel the rocks pushing on the floor boards. We bought this thing for 200 bucks, I paid 100 and my buddy paid 100. And this thing gave us 5 weeks of sheer laughter. Here are the only photos I have of it:

This is the night we bought it, and also the night it all began. I'd kill to relive those 5 weeks.

We decided that every Crown Vic should come with a hood ornament, so what could be better than a Nutcracker?

Notice the front bumper carnage from one of our escapades. And it also received the cactus on the antenna.

It also needed a tail. So we added a cornucopia and wrapped some Christmas lights around it.

Oh, and this particular Crown Vic is officially dead too. We made sure of that.

What a sad day. They are really nice looking cars. I was looking forward to the days when I can't wipe my own ass and I'm taking Geritol so I could rock a Crown Vic (kind of like Ratdog is doing now). But, I guess that chapter is not going to happen.
That's why I'm rockin' it now, while I can still enjoy it! :icon_rofl:

Those Maurauders are pure badass. I'd drive one in a heartbeat if I ever had the chance.

the new caprice is supposedly being built on the pontiac g8 chassis from holden

Technically I think it is based on the Holden Caprice which is the stretched version of the Holden Commadore (Pontiac G8). Built in and imported from Austrailia.

Saw the first one (unmarked "detective" model) last week. The unmarked thing is not really effective to anyone in the know who knows those are only being sold to law enforcement.

Off the top of my head, all that is left is

Dodge Charger
Ford Interceptors (Taurus and Explorer)
Chevy Impala
Chevy Caprice
Chevy Tahoe????
Carbon Motors E7 (http://www.carbonmotors.com/) Havent seen any of these yet.

I have read stories though, of departments buying a surplus of Crown Vic so they could have them into the near future.

They can buy about anything they want though.

The local Sherrif department has had Expeditions, Broncos, Silverados...

Not surpisingly the Bronco died in a high speed pursuit... I think it hit a pole.

When I was going to school in Nebraksa the state patrol out there had V6 bodied Camaros sporting LS1's for high speed interceptors.

We have some local agencies using Dodge Durangos, and Toyota Camry's as well.

I was speaking more (currently available new) most common purpose built cars purchased through fleet sales. True a dept. can go out and buy whatever they want, more so for unmarked cars (or I sure use seized cars in some cases). Prob can figure in vans for paddy wagons or surveilence too, which prob start out as cargo vans.

Does Ford or Chevy still do Mustang/Camaros for depts or highway patrol?

They use to have some sweet mustangs out here in georgia for the state patrol but the guys couldn't keep out of the ditches and they had to call a paddy wagon every time they arrested someone. so they went to the vic.

I've been seeing some local departments around here using a real slick pontiac. I talked to the sheriff about it and he says the dept insurance restricts the age of the deputy that drives the charger so they have to have another option.

On another note, my grandfather bought a marquis the last year they sold them. It has been the only style car I can remember him owning. He retired from ford years ago and he's been having a hard time watching them tear the old plant down in Hapeville. He hopes by the time his last one dies he'll be too old to need a car. I hope that car runs forever

Utah had an unmarked 2005ish GT that I saw several times a couple years ago, but I haven't seen a GT for a while. I was just reading about the new Taurus Interceptor's, and they do "ponder" in the article about the possibilities of a Mustang Interceptor.

Oh good. The already jacked up Crown Vic prices are going to skyrocket now.
